A troubled river
It’s been nearly a year since Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation won a ruling in a lawsuit filed against their plans to build a new culvert at the headwaters of Mill Brook, but the contentious project still hasn’t gone forward. But officials on both sides of the dispute say they are close to a resolution. Meanwhile, new data shows that conditions aren’t getting any better. Read that story here.
Aquinnah tackles erosion
Aquinnah is the latest town to address some of the impacts of the three winter storms that walloped the Island in the last couple of months. The town plans to dredge up West Basin to allow boats to navigate the area safely. They are also looking to reestablish a barrier at Red Beach. Read that story here.

New whale strategy
While the recent death of a juvenile right whale on Martha’s Vineyard has caught the public’s attention, federal officials have released a new, 70-odd page report on how to protect the critically endangered species amid a booming wind industry. The strategy was released last week, but officials say that it will be able to evolve with a changing habitat and a changing species. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"This has been a tragic month for North Atlantic right whales, beginning with news of a calf seriously injured by a boat propeller and now the death of a juvenile female."
— Philip Hamilton with the New England Aquarium on a right
whale that washed up on the Vineyard this week

Hot Topic Comment
"We now face the difficult challenge of deciding when restoring what was there before is an exercise in futility, and how to use limited resources to create something that can stand up to more frequently severe weather events and sea level rise due to climate change. Adaptation, not just restoration, is called for."
— Marina Lent comments on an estimate for
South Beach erosion damage
coming to nearly $2 million

Hot Topic Letter
"When the design of the project was offered to the committee, a number of us objected because it barely reflected what was requested from the designer. The design was defended by some members who appeared to have a conflict of interest, and thus were hardly unbiased in their opinion. On this and other issues, I felt that my input was no longer desired, and thus I resigned."
—Theodore Jochsberger on his resignation from West Tisbury's affordable housing committee

Today: Airport Fitness brings us Millennial Pickleball, and you just need to show up with a few bucks and a willingness to bounce a pickle back and forth with a paddle. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Join the Quilting Circle at the West Tisbury library. I love quilts. I just don’t like sewing, and by Wednesday night, nobody wants to be around me. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Two Island cartoonists extraordinaire, Paul Karasik and Mick Stevens, are speaking at the M.V. Museum in conjunction with the "Clifford: Our Big Red Dog" exhibit. Saw them at Islanders Write last year and they’re exceptional, especially together. 5:30 pm. –C.B.

A film for a cause
At 4 pm on Feb. 4, the M.V. Film Center will screen "The Wisdom of Trauma" as a fundraiser for the Red House, the Island's peer recovery support center. The film focuses on physician Gabor Maté, a specialist in childhood development and trauma, and his approach to processing traumatic events. The many potential bodily and other effects of trauma are covered in the film. Read more here.
