Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
|
|
|
On this day in 1905, Paul P. Harris founded the first Rotary Club in Chicago. Did you know Martha’s Vineyard also has a Rotary Club? They, and many other groups on the Island, have found ways to give back to the Vineyard community. Might be a good time to consider what you can offer back to the community as well. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Planning for a managerAs Tisbury's master plan approaches finalization, planners say that granting the town administrator more authority will allow for better implementation. This may give the position authority
over personnel and budget decisions, and may involve retitling the role as town manager. Current administrator Jay Grande says that what authorities might expand are to be determined, and that there will be a multi-step process behind any such change. Read more here.

Count on it Long-time West Tisbury town accountant Bruce Stone will be retiring, and the up-Island town is looking for his replacement. Town officials recently met with some candidates for the position. Read more here.

Zoning pushbackOak Bluffs and Tisbury residents recently attended a public hearing about proposed zoning amendments in Oak Bluffs, and the light
industrial mixed use overlay district was a key point of discussion. Several people pushed against the measure while a few voiced support for it. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "Internet went to a crawl, but no real impact." — West Tisbury Police Chief Matthew Mincone, responding to the nationwide cell service disruption yesterdayHot Topic Comment"Consumers on MV pay much higher prices for building and landscaping than people on the mainland. I always assumed that higher prices factored in the higher costs of doing business here. So $7,000 per year seems like a very reasonable rent for the operation of a business and storage of equipment. Are we going to allow light industrial activities in our residential neighborhoods so that contractors can avoid the normal costs of doing business?" — Dan Larkosh, on the reconsideration of zoning laws in Oak BluffsHot Topic Letter"I think that year-round businesses operating under these circumstances should be able to pay less taxes than summer-only businesses, as they are much more valuable to residents than T-shirt shops, high-end restaurants which are generally unavailable during the summer without an advance reservation, and snack shops which cater to beachgoers, bicyclists, and tourists." — Abraham Seiman on taxing equity for island businesses, in a letter written in February of 2016

Today: Pathways gives us Art House Movie Night with 1987’s "Siesta." Gabriel Byrne and Ellen Barkin are in it. I had forgotten they were married once. I’m just waiting for that to be a question at an old folks’ trivia night. 7:30 pm. –Connie Berry
I love the simplicity of this film: "Perfect Days." I keep reading about it, but haven’t gone to see it. It’s all about finding beauty in the everyday world around us, which is a good goal in my book. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

This weekend: Absolutely love this one: February Walk Together with Harbor Homes of M.V. Meet at the Caroline Tuthill Preserve in Edgartown. It’s a great way to learn more about homelessness on the Island. 10 am. The fantabulous Oak Bluffs library, in their brilliant
community-minded way, is looking to talk to folks about the future of the library with a Discussion and Potluck. Bring a dish and your ideas. 10 to 11:30 am. Friends of the Vineyard
Haven Library hold their meeting and would love it if you could join them at 10:15 am. Join the Chilmark library for Storytime with Drew, the youth services librarian. Sing, move, and play together. For ages 3 to 6. 11 am. If I wasn’t such a slug on Saturdays, I’d go with the Beach BeFrienders as they clean up the beach from Owen Park to Packer’s Dock. 2 to 5 pm. There’s a Public Ice Skating Session at the Ice Arena. Rent your skates or bring them. I would go if I knew Josh Aronie was manning the food area. 3 to 4 pm. Pianists Molly Sturges and Lisa Weiss perform side-by-side on the Mason & Hamlin piano at the Edgartown library’s program room. Their concert will feature works by Mozart, Faure, Dello Joio, and Schubert, written especially for four-hand piano performances. Two very
talented musicians. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
On Sunday, the Unitarian Universalist Society hosts discussion contemplating living in a world that is often unjust with the Rev. Michael Crumpler. 10 am. Get to Featherstone before all the love is lost when the February love-themed exhibit ends. Noon to 4 pm. Learn to grow mushrooms on
logs with Matthew Dix of North Tabor Farm. This class will primarily focus on shiitake mushrooms, but it will also address oyster and wine cap mushroom cultivation. Ages 10 and up. Follow directions to sign up. I’d love to grow mushrooms, because I love to eat mushrooms. 1 pm. There’s a Play Reading at the Hebrew Center of the dark comedy "Bad Jews" by Joshua Harmon. Directed by Myra Stark and Bari Boyer. All are welcome. In person and on Zoom. 4 to 6 pm. "American Fiction" is playing at the Film Center. Supposed to be a hilarious look at our obsession with reducing people to stereotypes. 7:30 pm. And what might I do this weekend? Well, I love a ride up to Menemsha for a bagful of cooked shrimp, which I eat in the car while overlooking the beautiful beach without telling anyone I live with.
