Today is International Women’s Day. Which Vineyard women do you know who have made contributions to the Island? We’re sure you can think of a bunch. This is held on the same day as the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. Today is also National Proofreading Day, and we’re certainly thankful to our proofreaders for making sure we write with grammatical accuracy. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A new beacon-ing The time has come for
a new beacon at Gay Head Light, to replace a model that has been used since 1953. The United States Coast Guard is running out of replacement parts for the DCB-224 beacons used in Aquinnah, and only six lighthouses maintained by the Coast Guard nationwide still use that model. The replacement is set to begin in September, during which a temporary beacon will be placed elsewhere on the cliffs. Town administrator Jeffrey Madison also hopes that a fresh beacon can bring back a very old light pattern. Read about it here.

In honor of National Meatball Day tomorrow, and the annual Meat Ball at the Ag Hall, enjoy this recipe from Brian Dowd many years ago: Slow Cooker Irish Meatballs. You can make it
vegetarian, add extra of your favorite herbs, or kick up the spice. Then toss the tasty tidbits onto pasta or stuff them into a sandwich, and then have a ball.
If you have a recipe to share with the community, send it along with a photo of the dish, and a brief backstory if you have one, to recipes@mvtimes.com.
