Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
Earlier this week, Tisbury planners shared their priorities for a portion of the town's business district, as part of Tisbury's ongoing master plan process. This comes after over a year of soliciting community engagement for the plan. Illustrations shown of possible changes for the district are not set in stone, and the process will continue to gather public input. Read more here.
In her Nonprofit Notebook piece, Mollie Doyle takes us through some of the Island's childcare options, while at the same time highlighting how we need more. In a 2019 study conducted by MVYouth, prior to COVID-19, access to early childcare was the top identified need for our community. Mollie tells us that many of the Island’s childcare organizations are in the works to expand. Read all about it here.
Long-distance paddleboarder Adam Nagler completed his 1,000-mile journey that started in South Carolina and ended in New York. Along the way was a stop off on the Vineyard. In all, he raised over $60,000 for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The paddleboarder said that his trip was also about raising awareness for those struggling with mental illness. Quote of the Day
"The people that we’re serving, they are our Island neighbors. They’re high school graduates at MVRHS who can’t find housing. I had six of them last year. That’s a high statistic, but it’s going to get worse because we are in a housing crisis and we need this shelter."
— Harbor Homes representative Lisa Belcastro on the organization's efforts to open a winter homeless shelter

Hot Topic Comment
"Why hold additional meetings for the residents that ‘aren’t on the island year round,’ when it’s a WINTER shelter we’re talking about?"
— Bria Mac comments on Harbor Homes hearing before the zoning board in Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Letter
"His query made me aware for the first time, how unfair it was to the native-born citizenry of this country, deprived of a similar choice and opportunity, as naturalized citizens were gifted, unless they wished to take the time and sought motivation to check into their own ancestry and possibly be permitted to do likewise."
— Doreen Kinsman writes to us with her memories of the naturalization process

Today: Play Magic: The Gathering at the Oak Bluffs library. What I like about this, even though I have no idea what it is, is that it’s in person and people will interact with each other rather than looking at screens. I look at a screen all day and it leaves you with those squint lines around your eyes. Trust me on this. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Laughter Builds an Island at the Old Whaling Church features Boston’s Mike McDonald and comic Brian Kiley. Profits benefit IHT’s veterans’ housing project, which reminds me: Don’t miss our Voices of Veterans special section coming out in the Oct. 26 MV Times. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
This weekend: Vineyard Montessori hosts its Open House for upper elementary and middle school-age students at the Church Street site from 9:30 to 11 am. This next one might be my favorite event of the year, besides having a cup of lobster bisque from Stanley and looking out at the water in Menemsha in February. Celebrate the autumn season at the Ag Society’s Harvest Festival. 10 am to 3 pm. Head to the Chilmark library for Storytime with Drew, the youth services librarian. Read, sing, move, and play together. Ages 3 to 6. 11 am. I’m not sure how they did this, but the Met Opera performs Sister Helen Prejean’s "Dead Man Walking" on screen at the Film Center. Did I tell you I met her? That was years ago. Great lady. 12:55 pm. The Oak Bluffs library hosts Leave the Leaves with Rich Couse. He’ll talk about why we should "leave the leaves" and how it benefits wildlife, your yard, and your wallet. 1 pm. The Martha's Vineyard Food & Wine Festival continues at Edgartown restaurants and hotels through Oct. 22. 2 pm Saturday and 1 pm Sunday. Try out Trails and Ales. Hike a guided trail and meet at Offshore Ale afterwards for a beverage. Cedar Tree Neck this week. Meet at 2 pm. Check out the Eco Bag workshop with Laurisa Rich at the Chilmark library. Make a Beach BeFriender bag out of found objects. 3 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, the Unitarian Universalist Society brings us a talk on impermanence, loss, and comfort. 10 am. Meet up-Island at Brookside Ridge Preserve for a walk through groves and glacial ridges. Register by using the link. 10 am. Grace Church in Vineyard Haven hosts an Open House to welcome back all alumni. Services of Holy Eucharist will be held at 8 am and 10 am, and evening prayer will be held at 4 pm. A reception will be held beginning at 11:15 am, and the parish hall and church will be open from 11:15 am to 4 pm. Town Bar & Grill hosts Football Sunday with a lot of specials to enjoy. (I’ve heard it’s chicken and ribs and more, oh my.) Opens at 12 pm. The Climate Book Club at the West Tisbury library meets at 4 pm in person. They’re reading "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Roberta Kirn brings Community Sing to Slough Farm. This is for all ages and you don’t have to be a professional to belt out these easy-to-learn songs. 5 pm. Who likes doing the time warp? Reminds me of my high school days when kids would dress up in full costume to celebrate "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." You can do it yourself when you go to the Circuit Arts and YMCA drive-in at the Ice Arena. Gates open at 6 pm, costume contest begins at 6:45 pm, with the movie afterwards at 7 pm. I’m planning a great weekend with old friends. Hope you have a great one, too. –C.B.

‘Two Sisters at Work’
The West Tisbury library features artwork by sisters Lynn Hoeft and Kris McDermet. The exhibit showcases pieces created in several mediums, including wool, silk, paper, and paint. Lynn has been a West Tisbury resident since 1971. Her sister, Kris, a Vermont resident, is a longtime visitor with deep West Tisbury roots. They are members of the Mathiesen family, who owned and operated Chicama Vineyards for 35 years. Both have a love of nature that shines through their work. Read about them here.
