Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Here's some music history — The Who released their classic double-album rock opera "Tommy" exactly 55 years ago in the United Kingdom. The author of this intro is less than half as old as the album, but remembers his dad's worn-down trifold copy that was ready to split apart. "Tommy" also has a song about newspapers: the 12-second "Miracle Cure." As the Vineyard gets busier, you might even see a "Pinball Wizard" log a high score at Ryan Family Amusements in O.B. New study draws similarities between whales and humans
Research published in a scientific journal this month discovered a "sperm whale phonetic alphabet" that resembles how humans communicate. The Island has a storied history with whales. Just across the Sound, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, sperm whale sounds were first recorded, and before that, members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) believe Moshup transformed his people into whales. More PFAS contamination in West Tisbury
The state has labeled a closed West Tisbury landfill a source of PFAS chemicals found in two nearby drinking water wells. This will add to growing PFAS mitigation efforts and add to costs for the town. It’s not the first time the Island has had to deal with the so-called "forever chemicals." Read more here.

The community that fishes together
Registrations are open for summer and fall memberships with the Community Supported Fishery. The program, first launched in 2022, gives members packages of seafood caught by local fishermen, and pays the fishermen. Each package shows the name of the boat that caught the seafood. Read about it here.

Spectacular 35-acre Boldwater Association waterfront estate on Edgartown Great Pond with breathtaking views over 1,000 ft. wide, including a low, brushy pond in the front terrain, the 3/4-mile wide Lyles Bay, dreamy Swan Neck Point, the 1 1/2-mile wide main pond, and a barrier beach to the ocean beyond. The handful of well-pruned trees on the property enhance the water views. The sophisticated and charming quality house was built by Andrew Flake, arguably the finest Vineyard builder over the last 40 years. Mark Hutker created an innovative design with an arc-shape nautical theme, so every room faces the water. The 3 second-floor bedrooms enjoy large terraces, and the primary bedroom on the first floor opens to a nice deck and a quiet garden sanctuary. The handmade, luxury, kitchen cabinetry and extensive woodworking were done by Smallbone, a British Company noted for time-honored design and craftsmanship. Adding to this estate, reflecting decades of careful planning and development, is a lovely private pool and pool house, 4-room guest suite over the garage with a large deck, two stone-wall-enclosed specimen fruit tree meadows, a large field circled by a grand stone wall, an idyllic lily pond, and two miles of private trails. Last but not least, are 14+ abutting sub-dividable acres into potentially 3-4 lots. Keep boats and small craft on your mooring at the water's edge for a short trip to the 3,000-ft. Boldwater private beach. Boldwater is 30 homesites on 450 acres with 150 acres of conservation, and it abuts approximately 1,500 acres of conservation lands and a few large estates. A most remarkable rural area convenient to town and the airport.
Quote of the Day
"Mother’s Day was not designed to encourage people to be nice to their mother. It was part of women’s effort to gain power to change society."
—Carolyn O’Daley on the origins of Mother’s Day

Hot Topic Comment
"Simple, make these large homes rely solely on clean energy, like solar. A big house creates jobs, promotes the Island economy, adds a large tax base to towns, and best of all, they do not use local services like the school systems, police, or fire, that all raise our taxes."
—Mark Acker on the Edgartown bylaw to restrict big houses

Hot Topic Letter
"A Kindle may reduce my clutter, but it will never replace the delight of wandering through a bookstore and seeing what you discover."
—Kevin R. Loughlin on joys of visiting local bookstores

Staying in?
We’re heading into Memorial Day weekend, so we’re feeling this Cathy Walthers’ recipe for Quinoa Salad with Peaches and Flowers from Edible Vineyard magazine. The dish is pretty as a picture — and tasty too.

The Write Pitch
Editors and agents will once again be at Islanders Write this year to help people pitch their books. "The panel was very helpful. It was rewarding to get the assessment of pros," says Loren Ghiglione, who pitched his idea in 2023. Get your own 3 minutes to pitch a clear book idea before industry professionals at the 2024 Islanders Write. Read how here.
