Give back our plaque
An African American Heritage Trail plaque commemorating enslaved woman Rebecca Amos has disappeared from Great Rock Bight Preserve within the last couple weeks. Trail co-founder Elaine Weintraub reported the theft of the plaque to Chilmark Police, as neither she nor the M.V. Land Bank that owns the preserve can come up with another explanation for its disappearance. Weintraub also says that the trail currently lacks funding to replace the plaque. Read more here.
75 years of baking
Argie Humphreys got his start with Humphreys bakery in the 1920s when he was selling bread out of the back of his car in Vineyard Haven during the Depression. He would open his first store soon after, and then three-quarters of a century later, Life of Humphry’s, run by Argie’s granddaughter, announced that they are closing the bakery and delhi in May. Read our story here.

A surprise landing
Residents of Oak Bluffs were surprised to see a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter land in Alley Waban Park this morning. Local officials are reporting that a patient had to be transported off-Island, and the weather was bad enough that MedFlight was unable to travel to the Island. The park appeared to be the safest landing area. Read our coverage here.

The MV Times: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?

This beautiful wooded 4.12 acre parcel of land is peaceful and serene, and ready to build. The well is installed, boundaries staked, perc test approved for a five-bedroom home and a septic plan designed. The large, flat building envelope on this parcel offers many siting possibilities, the ability to create a meadow and open gardens or keep a more wooded feel, and the land is grandfathered for a possible guest house. The sought after Plum Bush Point neighborhood is located between two large conservation preserves, the 91-acre Short Cove Preserve and the 173 acre-Sepiessa Point Reservation. Launch your kayak or small boat from the Sepiessa Point Reservation just around the corner. This is a wonderful piece of land in a special location…private and close to nature yet convenient to West Tisbury town center and centrally located on the island, essentially equidistant from here to Menemsha Harbor, Edgartown Main Street and Tisbury Main Street. This property provides natural beauty and easy access to all the Vineyard has to offer, including access to Lambert's Cove Beach. Spend your day hiking miles of walking trails or exploring the waters and beaches of the South Shore, Tiah’s Cove and Tisbury Great Pond, and then come home to your private and quiet country retreat.
Quote of the Day
"People come in over the summer all the time and tell us, ‘I worked for your grandfather, and it was my first job.’ I want everybody to know that I appreciate it, and my family appreciates it. Honestly, I’m going to miss that the most."
