Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1982, the classic film "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" was released in theaters. In 2002 on this day, the popular reality television show"American Idol" made its debut. The Vineyard has seen filming take place for television shows in recent years. With the artistic flair the Martha’s Vineyard community produces, maybe there’ll be a young Islander who’ll take inspiration from their surroundings to make it on the big screen. Both Bishop Johnson and her spouse, Rev. Mary Johnson, said they’re hopeful seeing such important changes play out. Read more here.
Time to vote in Tisbury
Polling at the Emergency Services building closes at 8 pm today. Two races are contested on the ballot — for the school committee and constable. There is also a write-in candidate in the select board race. Mary Bernadette Budinger-Cormie recently entered, spurred to run by her concerns over town housing issues. She is challenging the incumbent select board chair Roy Cutrer. Read more here.
Edgartown police get expanded enforcing capabilities
The Edgartown select board approved the designation of the town’s police officers as harbor patrol yesterday. All personnel, from lieutenant down, now have the authority to enforce state boating laws, including operating a boat under the influence. Edgartown Police Chief Bruce McNamee’s request to the board stemmed from the boat that ran aground on a Chappaquddick beach earlier this month. Read more here.
