Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.

On this day in 1965, civil rights activists were attacked by state troopers as they were crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., marching for the right to
vote, something that can easily be taken for granted. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

‘Wild West’ transformationThe Martha’s Vineyard Commission is celebrating 50 years and we take a look at that history: Did you know that the regional regulatory body stemmed from a proposal from Ted Kennedy? The senator proposed turning the whole Island into a national park. Obviously that didn’t happen, but the intention to slow down booming development became a reality. Read that story here.

An incredibly rare occurrence Researchers with the New England Aquarium say that a gray whale — typically seen in the Pacific Ocean — was spotted about 30 miles south of Nantucket, not far from our own shores. The aquarium says that the rare experience likely stems from climate change; as more ice melts up north, the passage is easier for the whales to travel to the Atlantic. Read that story here.

‘I love this’In his latest essay, publisher Charles Sennott writes about how he took in an event — billed as a Carnival hangover party — at the Loft
this past weekend. The intention was to take in the flavor and to highlight our new language translation service. We hear from a Brazilian D.J. who gave The Times a shout-out at the event. The column is part of a monthly check-in on the progress under the new ownership. Read that here.

Newly built, custom home located in Katama, just a short walk to
Edgartown and a quick bike ride to South Beach. A new owner will appreciate the thought and attention to detail that has been incorporated into this home, which was designed and built by an experienced building company, Speedwagon Partners. Featuring a combination of contemporary design and expertly crafted details, like bespoke cabinetry, porcelain and quartz surfaces, and white oak flooring, the home instantly feels very luxurious and elegant. There are a total of four bedrooms and four full baths, plus two half-baths and two laundry rooms. The living spaces are open to each other, yet also defined, with an abundance of natural light, thanks to oversized windows and high ceilings. The living room fireplace, Wolf and Thermadore kitchen appliances, and a 10-foot quartz island are just some of the features that make this property stand out. A finished lower-level completes the home, and the property is well-landscaped, focusing on a gunite pool and a hot tub with
tasteful stonework, plus a gas fire pit and decking.

Quote of the Day "It was a tremendous season [...] They worked hard all year, they had great team chemistry. They were really into working collectively and played well together. I’m really proud of their effort." — Coach Michael Joyce reflecting on the boys basketball team’s
season following their loss in round of 16 this weekHot Topic Comment"Interesting that Vineyard Wind; a company which previously claimed there will be no negative impact on the fish or the people fishing for them, are offering compensation for their negative impact on the fishing industry." — Ellen Reynolds, on the opening of a compensation program for fishermen affected by Vineyard Wind activity.Hot Topic Letter"Access to the beaches on Chappy has a profound impact on a tremendous number of people, the local economy, the quality of life of residents and the quality of experience for visitors. In itself, OSV access isn’t a recreational activity; it serves as the sole practical means of access, for almost half of the publicly accessible beaches on the Vineyard." — Island resident, business owner, and M.V. Beachgoers Access Group president Peter Sliwkowski on OSV accessibility on Chappaquiddick
