Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The Vineyard is a beautiful place, which makes it easy to notice when people litter. That’s why we at The Times are drawing your attention to Upcycling Day. If you haven’t heard, to upcycle is to make something new out of objects that would otherwise be garbage. Maybe there’s an old container that could be a planter, or cardboard rolls that could be your new organizing system. Also, Laurisa Rich of the Beach BeFrienders beach cleanup program reminded us that this year’s Agricultural Fair will have an upcycled art award. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Big names on Juneteenth weekend
Vineyarders celebrated Juneteenth this weekend with Representative Ayanna Pressley at the Juneteenth Jubilee, and with local chefs at the Taste of Juneteenth. Pressley told a packed Union Chapel to vote for policies, not personalities, and warned against threats to U.S. democracy. And at the Portuguese–American Club, barbeque, jerk chicken and coconut shrimp were on the menu. Read about Pressley's visit here, and about Taste of Juneteenth here.

SSA doles out pay increases
Workers for the Steamship Authority not in a union are expected to see a pay bump, but the final amount will depend on how the ongoing negotiations between the ferry line and labor unions turn out. The decision came on the same day the SSA board entered into an executive session to discuss these negotiations and the contract with Rober Davis, the general manager of the ferry service. Who’s running the harbor?
Tisbury will likely hire a new harbormaster at tomorrow’s select board meeting. But getting the candidates to the town’s select board has taken months. The town was aware of the harbormaster’s intention to retire in March. He’s out two days before probably the busiest day of the year. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"Just because I hold the title of Congresswoman, I didn’t stop being a Black woman … How I show up is disruptive to people who cannot handle the light of this melanated bald crown."
—Representative Ayanna Presley on on being a Black woman in Congress

Hot Topic Comment
"The decision to replace Eddie Stahl is a disgrace. He has been the heart and soul of Chilmark tennis for decades, and CTAC’s unexplained decision to replace him ignores the voice of the tennis community — an arrogant decision by a board that is no longer accountable to the public it supposedly serves. The directors should be replaced, and the Chilmark tennis courts should be freed from their grip."
—Mark Gimbel on longtime tennis professional and leader Eddie Stahl not being rehired

"Our Island has finite resources. Our planet is warming at an alarming rate — stop cutting down large trees. Conservation rather than accelerated growth fueled by greed must be at the forefront of decisionmaking."

Multi-cultural Celebration of Stitched Fine Art
Sixteen artists are featured in Featherstone Center for the Arts’ Rising Up! exhibit in the Francine Kelly Gallery. "I sought out artists who are on the leading edge. Art moves [people]," said curator Michele Beasely Maloney. "I wanted people to see that." All artists employ stitch as a crucial manner of mark-making in their work. The exhibit runs through July 21, with a curator talk on July 10 at 4 pm. Check that out here.
