Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Rachel Carson’s "Silent Spring" was published on this day in 1962. Then, on this day in 2019, a week of international climate change protests led by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg ended after millions participate. Check out our own Climate Connections column here. Edgartown 2
Months after the Oak Bluffs select board voted in favor of adopting a new town alcohol policy, it’s finally time to put it into effect, seeing that summer is officially over. And as was the plan —  starting Sunday, town establishments will be forced to move up last call and close half an hour earlier. But some Oak Bluffs business owners say the change will have far-reaching impacts, and some fear the town will lose part of its identity, and become ‘Edgartown 2.’ More here.
Pole problems
Eversource is attempting to make some parts of up-Island more resilient in storms by adding a new line in Chilmark. The plan includes the addition of new poles. The utility cut the number of poles way down after an initial round of public meetings, but Chilmark residents still don’t like what could be in their line of sight. They’re pushing for wires to be buried. Read more here.

‘Making the Monster’
As filmmaker David Bigelow gears up for major production to film his "Jaws" documentary on the Island in 2024, he hopes to follow in Spielberg’s footsteps by enlisting Islanders to work on the crew. The next leg of his six-years-in-the-making project featuring the involvement of Islanders in the making of Spielberg’s 1975 "Jaws" will focus on filming dramatic reenactments with actors and a full crew. Read more details about the upcoming production here.

Quote of the Day
"Jimmy lived life on a grand scale. Whatever he did, he did big."
— Islander Jim Green
remembers Jimmy Buffett

Hot Topic Comment
"You say ‘And none of us wants more litigation,’ but I would suggest that given the precedent this case sets, you should be looking to, at the very least, request and opinion from the court system in Massachusetts. In my opinion, this can’t possibly be above board behavior in our governmental funding."
— Bill Simpson on an essay criticizing the MVRHS school committee for
using anonymous donations

Hot Topic Letter
Ken MacLean writes to us thanking hospital nurses: "We are so fortunate on the Island to have such great care at the hospital. Huge thank-yous to nurses Shereem, Daisy, Anne, Justin, Sarah, Sheila, and Jessica, and nursing assistant Lesa. You all are terrific."
Today: Polly Hill hosts Great Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines for the Northeast, giving us lots of choices for home gardens. I need this. I don’t know Holly from Hemlock. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

A little Restorative Reset with Jelisa Difo sounds perfect for after work. Refuel all those blown gaskets. Think long holds, breathing, and stillness. Edgartown library. 5:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: One of my favorite Island spots, the P.A. Club, hosts a Benefit for Veterans Housing Program with IHT, the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center, and the veterans program at MVCS. Lots of letters, but they all do important work. Come see. 5 pm. –C.B.

The Lee effect
Tropical storms can bring special birds to the Vineyard, so, as Wild Side columnist Matt Pelikan writes, birders found themselves hoping we would land in the sweet spot: a storm strong enough to deliver good birds, but mild enough to do little damage. It wasn’t exactly a direct hit, but Lee did give this birder some fun. Read that story here.
