Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is Global Running Day, so sounds like a good time to tighten your shoelaces and hit the road! Although, speed walking might be a better speed for some of us. We’ve had some beautiful weather recently, and there are a number of lovely places across the Vineyard to explore. Take a friend with you while you’re at it. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Aquafarmers try hanging their oysters in the current
After deciding their oysters didn’t grow fast enough on the seafloor, the only two active oyster farmers in Menemsha Pond decided to use cages suspended six feet under water this year, and they’ve already seen promising growth. Jeffrey Canha, an oyster farmer in Tisbury, who lost two-thirds of his 1.5 million oyster seeds in the deep waters of Lagoon Pond over the last few years, will also use floating cages for the first time this year. Canha also joined a pilot program run by the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group and the Nature Conservancy to help grow oysters for reef restoration. Read more here.
Housing challenge worsens on-Island
The Martha’s Vineyard Commission said the cost of buying a house increased again last year. In a new report, the commission said the median cost for a new house last year was $1.55 million, and wages on the Island haven’t kept up. The report was released as the proposed Martha’s Vineyard Housing Bank faced setbacks at the state legislature. Both were discussed during a visit to the Island by Edward Augustus, the state secretary of housing and livable communities, part of an effort to develop a new statewide housing plan. DA vs. Sheriff dispute heats up
The District Attorney's office filed motions seeking the disciplinary records of deputy sheriffs involved in two more criminal cases, adding to nine pending cases for which records were sought last week. DA Robert Galibois II said his office will continue to file requests as cases come to trial, until the sheriff's office complies. One of the requests filed Wednesday involves an alleged attacker in the recent Oak Bluffs beating, and one involves a case — dismissed that same day — for an allegedly intoxicated driver. Quote of the Day
"I’m nervous, but mostly excited … This is something we’ve thought about for nine months. And it’s something that’s finally happened."
—Paul Beeson on the opening of Dairy Queen under new ownership

Hot Topic Comment
"Did the airport study or evaluate the revenue projections, estimated usage, and the cost of administration to justify the increases? Automated parking lots don’t warrant paying a third party vendor to manage them. However, the price increase’s appear to lack any cost justification. Daily parking at the island airport at $25 a day seems excessive."
—Michael McAuliffe on the parking fee increases at Martha’s Vineyard Airport

Hot Topic Letter
"Earth’s environment is made up of millions of microsystems such as the Mill Brook watershed. Every stream affects the body of water it flows into. Let’s get serious about restoring the Mill Brook to its natural, free-flowing state."
—Katherine Scott on the need for action to restore the river herring population on the Vineyard

Taking off with John Levinson
Follow along as Allison Roberts takes us through John Levinson's journey with flying planes. Levinson's father was a pilot in World War II, and following in his footsteps, Levinson bought his first plane in 2003. Levinson now owns a Mooney, which he described as stable and completely unsexy, before taking Roberts up over the Island. They flew over Aquinnah and saw the lighthouse, which appeared miniscule on the Cliffs. Then they flew over the Elizabeth Islands, across the Cape Cod Bay and past Nantucket before returning to the M.V. Airport.
