Beat the beetles Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation are working to manage the invasive southern pine beetles, which are deemed a threat to the Island’s pitch pine. Quote of the Day "The archaeology I’m interested in doing is … the study of whole communities, how the people in them lived, how they interacted, and how those communities came to be and were shaped over time." — Michigan State University anthropology PhD candidate Jeffrey Burnett on an archaeological survey underway at Baptist Tabernacle Park
Hot Topic Comment "I am so happy for River…. look at that smile…. he’s so happy…. these are stories that are so great and heartwarming…. more of these please!!!!! This is fantastic!!" — Dolores Borza on a Vineyard 11-year-old living his Bruce Springsteen dream
Hot Topic Letter "A resident of the town inquired if we would be there as it was understood that there would be a ceremony that would provide for recognition of Carl and his service to the town. I had not been contacted, nor had anyone else in my family been notified,
nor was our family involved in the planning or approval of this action." — Donald Widdiss, Dawn Widdiss, Heath Widdiss, Jason Widdiss, and Josie Iadiccico say they weren’t invited to a groundbreaking and street dedication ceremony in Aquinnah.
Tomorrow:I don’t typically suggest going to the same place back to back, but I’ll make an exception for Mah Jongg for Beginners at the Edgartown library. You can either do what I do and play alone on a computer, or you can learn how to play with actual live people. 10 am. –C.B.
