Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of the MV Times. Our first paper came out on May 3rd, 1984. We’ll bring you more tomorrow, but with the newspaper industry struggling all around us, we’re proud to still be bringing you the news. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. View it in full here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Granary Gallery

New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week. A warm welcome awaits you.
Students take a stand
Protests have erupted nationwide on college campuses calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, and some of those participating are graduates from the Vineyard. The Times spoke with a few students who described their firsthand experiences with the tense protests and what it’s like on the ground at some of these campuses. Read more here.
West Tisbury’s future
West Tisbury residents considered what they wanted for their future, and a top issue was a need for better communication from the town. Other issues that residents wanted to be looked at included increased affordable housing and protecting the town’s water quality. These, and upcoming steps, will help to update West Tisbury’s master plan. Read more here.

Conch and climate
A researcher from the University of New Hampshire is working on a project studying the impacts of warming waters on the conch, also known as whelk. Data was collected from water bodies on the Island, with data due back shortly. One interesting note so far, lab results have dispelled a myth that whelk prefer female horseshoe crabs. Read our coverage here.

The cows come home
After a long winter, the cows at Grey Barn excitedly headed out to the pastures, kicking up their feet. Thank you to Tina Miller for showing us some happy cows!

Quote of the Day
"We’re paying so much tuition to these schools, and it’s not fair for them to be using their loads of money to aid this war, which many of us are not in support of."
— MVRHS graduate and student protester Madeleine Benggtson on involvement in pro-Palestine student protests

Hot Topic Comment
"The guess here is that folks will most likely change their habits at the end of the work day — waiting until they’re safely home before drinking — and the first mile past any given liquor store will no longer be littered with empty nip bottles. Everybody wins."
—Nis Kildegaard on the banning of nip bottles on Island

Hot Topic Letter
"Are you really telling me that Taylor Swift is going to make poetry accessible to 'the masses' with her new album, 'Tortured Poets'? Her work may be a tad pedestrian for my sweet little old lady taste, but bless her heart for trying. People are asking who Dylan Thomas is, and Patti Smith has gotten more attention than she has in years."
—Abigail McGrath weighs in on The Tortured Poets Department

Today: Join artists Elizabeth Whelan and Adriana Eftimie for their new Art Adventures TV show. It's a fun thing. They explore all different aspects of the art world, including history and culture. Besides, there’s nothing Elizabeth cannot do. On MVTV and YouTube. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

The M.V. Film Center screens "Wicked Little Letters" with Olivia Colman. Another woman who can do anything. Takes place in a small English seaside town in the 1920s. I love it already. 7:30 pm. You can read Abby Remer’s review here. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Happy Birthday, Dear Town Bar & Grill. Five years now they’ve been making those fried pickles I love so much. Come to their party with music by the Mike Benjamin Band and pass apps. Maybe even pickles. 8 to 11 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Get ready for a dish that's fit for an Island feast: Seafood Shepherd's Pie, a recipe by Paul W. Bagnall. If you're not up to using lobster or scallops, a modified version of the mashed potatoes and creamy sauce can still be prepared. A little culinary imagination goes a long way.

Calling all cooks and bakers: we would love to share a recipe with the community. Email it to recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a brief backstory and a photo of your final creation.

On my mind
"Scents of spring, the forest almost luminescent with green moss …as I rode through the new Land Bank trails …" An idyllic ride turns traumatic and then becomes a community full of care. This "On My Mind" shares gratitude for EMTs, RNs, PTs, family, and others. Written by Charles Silberstein with Laura Roosevelt here.
