Sheriffs continue DA stonewall After the Cape and Islands DA asked the state’s highest court whether it would order two sheriffs to submit 20 years of officer disciplinary records, both those sheriffs have asked the court to dismiss the DA’s complaint. Dukes County Sheriff Bob Ogden stated in court filings that the complaint cannot compel him to fulfill the records request, and that he has never failed to provide
disciplinary records for a particular case. Read more here.
Island Time opens doors back up after state ruling Island Time, one of two dispensaries on the Island, reopened on Saturday, June 29, after being closed for 6½ weeks. The dispensary saw over 150 customers and made sales that were 20 percent over last year’s numbers. Island Time closed after the Island’s only permitted marijuana-growing operation stopped production. The decision to reopen was
the result of a successful back-and-forth with state regulators. Read more here.
Two loggerheads washed ashore last month Last year, there were no reported deceased loggerhead strandings on the Island; there was one leatherback found dead in August. Quote of the Day "I applaud the fact that we are going from 0 to a Tier 4 [...] That’s a great move and reflects reality and the concern for the environment. But why are we making a more efficient diesel operation, instead of eliminating oil from the fleet?" —Vineyard representative Jim Malkin on the most recent SSA vessel conversion
Hot Topic Letter "The event was a vivid reminder of the shame in the exclusion of Blacks from the Campground a century ago. Going forward, the Camp Meeting Association and the NAACP will work together to heal the travesty of the past and celebrate Juneteenth together." —Thomas Dresser writes to us commending the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony
Today:Sometimes I get personally excited about summer events. Then I have to gear myself up to leave the house. Featherstone Monday Night Music, though, that one I really enjoy. BlueSwitch Band plays tonight. 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry
BINGO that’s where I’m at. I know. It’s a simple thing but I have to say, I love it. Where else could you win some bucks around here and also have a good time? At the American Legion in Vineyard Haven. Play starts at 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:I’m heading out to Lambert’s Cove Beach to enjoy some Yoga on the Beach. It’s heart-centered. I love heart stuff. I love the emojis and I love Valentine’s Day candy, so I’m there with you doing yoga. In spirit. 8 am. –C.B.
