Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The Times wishes Islanders a happy Make A Book day! The holiday just missed the publishing anniversary of Geraldine Brooks' "Caleb's Crossing" on May 3. We at the newspaper appreciate our community's authors, illustrators, and creatives — so whether you're editing a manuscript, sketching a protagonist, or reading for inspiration, thank you for your additions to the Vineyard's literary legacy. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week. A warm welcome awaits you.
Dozens of parents allege unfair judgements
Thirty-four people submitted two petitions to state lawmakers seeking the removal of a probate and family court judge who presides on Martha’s Vineyard, alleging she has put children at risk in several custody disputes. The calls for removal were echoed through social media and an online petition. Two women spoke out and shared their stories with The Times. Read more here.
Midnight tunes
If you’re looking for chill vibes in Oak Bluffs, that may be coming to Midnight Taco. The summertime taqueria is looking to have live music, although don’t expect concerts. The restaurant owner wants to bring music to fit the atmosphere of the restaurant. The Oak Bluffs select board still needs to give the green light. Read more here.

Triple hitter
Same day, same high school, same Island. Three baby girls were born on the same day to MVRHS teachers. Quite the happy surprise, and what are the odds of that happening? Probably pretty low. Read more here.

Excellent turnkey Edgartown opportunity! This warm, post-and-beam, three-bedroom home is conveniently located in the Birnam Woods association, tucked back off Edgartown - West Tisbury Road. The property is easily accessible to Edgartown village, the bike path, Morning Glory Farm, Vineyard Golf Club, and South Beach by way of Meetinghouse Road. The house had tasteful updating and it features an open-concept first floor, which offers a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room with a fireplace that opens onto the deck, plus a full bathroom. The second floor has the primary bedroom and a generous guest bedroom with a shared bathroom. The third floor has another bedroom with a bonus hangout space that is perfect for kids. The full basement is clean and well maintained, and it offers high ceilings. It would be easy to finish it off as additional living space. The property also has a garage with a large, unfinished space above it, offering many possibilities, plus there's an outdoor shower and lovely plantings around the house. The property has access to the association tennis, and it offers a solid rental history. Rentals are booked for July and August (rental income to transfer with the property), and the home is being sold furnished to accommodate the rentals in place. The home is connected to the town sewer, allowing for expansion up to 7 bedrooms. A pool is also a possibility within R60 setbacks. This is an inviting, move-in ready home waiting to welcome family and friends as your personal Island retreat or as a solid rental investment.
Quote of the Day
“We have a pretty small staff of reporters, and their dedication to covering stories that matter to them is really inspiring … They are doing something they really believe in, and I think that’s everything for students these days. I’m really proud of them. They deserve this recognition.”
—Kate Hennigan on the High School View student reporters, who recently won journalism awards

Hot Topic Comment
“Other countries worldwide speak at least two languages and some speak more than that. A bilingual education only improves a student’s chances of connecting with others in our very diverse world. It’s a good thing!”
— Donna Blackburn on the Tisbury School’s exploration of Brazilian Portuguese language class offerings

Hot Topic Letter
“The students are the target of a vicious propaganda campaign that seeks to portray them as supporters of Hamas and terrorism. One has only to listen to what they are actually saying to see that such accusations against them are slanderous.”
— David Mintz, responding to pro-Palestinian student protests

Today: You’ll find the amazing Jeremy Berlin making sweet music at Sweet Life Café on Thursday nights. The place has such an ambiance. Once you try it, you’ll want to go back every week. Starts at 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

“Nowhere Special” stars James Norton, one of my British actor favs, and it seems like a bittersweet tale that I think I’d love. If you do go see it, let me know how it is. I might just leave the house for this one. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Summer’s on its way, and one sign is the Season Opening of Fish MV. Local seafood, wildly tasty fish tacos, wonderful outdoor seating, and best of all — I can walk to it. Main Street, Vineyard Haven. 11:30 am to 8 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Here's a recipe that's great for using up any leftovers in your fridge: Chicken & Vegetable Frittata, shared by Nicole Jackson many years ago. This oven-baked dish with a creamy sauce and melted cheese will have you going back to a local farmstand for extra dozens of eggs.

If you have a seasonal recipe to share with the community, send it to us at recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one.
