Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is World Caring Day, which we wish more people celebrated. It’s also National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, which we can appreciate, and National VCR Day, which left our younger staff members scratching their heads. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
Haley’s comments For the first time, Aquinnah select board member Gary Haley explained what led to him being charged by the Massachusetts Ethics Commission. At a hearing on Monday — which is continuing today — Haley told commissioners that he was attempting to help the town using his skills as an electrician. But when the project specs changed and he was forced to hire additional help, he needed to seek compensation from the town. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
Happy campers? The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission is considering a proposal to bring a campground to the former Webb’s campground site in Southern Woodlands in Oak Bluffs. The concept was contemplated at a meeting of the Land Bank on Monday and has been referred to the Oak Bluffs advisory committee for further consideration. Several commissioners spoke favorably about the concept. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.
Charge ahead The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School school committee has approved funding for electric charging stations after the school district took
delivery of two electric school buses. The decision came at a meeting on Monday night. The school committee also heard from a parent upset about how the high school handled the change in track coaches, as well as another individual who is upset with the district suing the town of Oak Bluffs over the artificial turf proposal. Reporter Lucas Thors has this update.

Hot Topic Letter Tony Peak wrote about the Tisbury School renovation and addition project being over budget. "The cost to the town of Tisbury, and in my opinion to the Island, of maintaining four independent middle schools is simply NOT sustainable. If the Island does not choose to seize this opportunity to reconsider an Island-wide change in our educational framework, I believe that well before the 30-year repayment of the borrowing to revamp the Tisbury School has elapsed, we will have been forced by economics to abandon the K-8 model now followed by Tisbury, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs,
and West Tisbury. Tisbury will be left with a facility, not yet paid for, but superfluous."
Today:You can’t beat the walking options at the State Forest. It’s so perfect that even I have been known to walk there. I like a nice smooth surface because I tend to be a bit klutzy, and you don’t want to take a fall at my age. Anytime. –Connie Berry
It'sOpen Mic Night at Island Music and you can either listen or play. I imagine both are a good time. It’s better if some of us just listen. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:That fabulous kid/parent-centric Family Center offers Wednesday mornings reading and learning at the Edgartown library. Sounds
like a great place to be with your young ones. Well, I love a library at any age, but you get my drift. 10:30 am. –C.B.
