First, happy Friday. Second, and more importantly, it’s National Safer Workplace Day. Vineyarders clock in at fast-paced construction projects, bustling restaurants, and to fish the Atlantic. Here at The Times, we just have to mind our posture, but if your workplace is unsafe, we will cover it. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Freight of fancy The costs for the third of the newest freight vessels coming to the Island has jumped in retrofitting costs, what officials say is due to supply chain issues and labor shortages. Meanwhile, converting the boat to electric would cost $25 million, and that’s enough to discourage the ferry line from pursuing the greener approach. Read our coverage here.

Quote of the Day "He was the town in a lot of ways, [...] He was very important to the community and very important to the country." — Joseph Sollitto, parade organizer, on Fred B. "Ted" Morgan Jr., this year’s Independence Day parade dedicateeHot Topic Comment"We are all measured by how we treat those least fortunate. Thank you for drawing attention to these folks, for not
infantilizing them and for describing their sometimes meager (and sometimes truly rich) existence in terms we can understand. Thank you as well to Sgt. Sherman and all the talented members of the HUB MV and the folks at MVCS/Harbor Homes/Red House/etc. their commitment to this population. I hope to be a part of whatever solution we all develop to enable these people — fellow members of our island community — to become housed, employed, and relieve them from the pressures of life in the damn forest." — Cass Luskin, a defense counsel on the Island, comments on our story about the homeless on Martha’s VineyardHot Topic Letter"Yesterday on the south shore, we found a most distressing situation: a Northern gannet (the largest seabird in the North Atlantic) with a fishing net wrapped tightly around its neck. The beautiful bird was not alive. Imagining this great bird strangled and entangled brought on a deep anguish for us." — Mary Marro and Laurisa Rich, on behalf of the Beach BeFrienders, write to us expressing their concern over endangered wildlife in the ocean

Live music at Featherstone Continuing with Featherstone’s tradition of live music on Mondays and Fridays, The Dukes of Circuit Avenue will kick off the series Friday, June 28, with an eclectic playlist. They'll feature songs by Marvin Gay, Michael Jackson, the Beatles, and Tina Turner, to name just a few. Before Featherstone was established as the Center for the Arts, it was home to music. Musical Mondays began about 28 years ago, and music on Fridays was added with Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish during COVID. Tonight’s group describes
themselves as "not just any band, but a killer ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists, with years of experience." Read more here.
