Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National K-9 Veterans Day. It’s also on this day when the U.S. Army started a training program for service dogs leading up to World War II. Appreciation to all the dogs serving out there. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

State delays Five Corners study
State contractors uncovered contaminated soil in Vineyard Haven when planning to improve drainage and mitigate some of the flooding at Five Corners. That was almost a year ago, and town officials are frustrated the state has tied the project into a more meaningful and complex plan to address flooding. Read the story here.
Bank robbery trial pushed
Two individuals charged in the armed bank robbery on the Vineyard in 2022 have asked to push the trial back until October, and the judge agreed. According to court filings, they are looking to work with prosecutors to make a deal. Meanwhile, the two other suspects who have been charged have already entered plea deals and they are scheduled to be sentenced next month. Read that here.

A lesson in misinformation
We are co-publishing a story from the New Bedford Light that looked at misinformation following the death of a North Atlantic right whale that washed ashore on the Vineyard earlier this winter. We believe the piece can enlighten our readers on the sprawling and complex story of offshore wind. Read the story here.
MEETINGS

The Oak Bluffs planning board meets on Thursday at 5 pm. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"After owning 19 Raw and 19 Prime, I felt like a restaurant of that caliber is needed in Vineyard Haven. Anything like that doesn’t exist [...] I want to bring something … inspiring and elegant to the town."
— Local restaurateur Joseph Monteiro on his new restaurant’s impending debut in Vineyard Haven

Hot Topic Comment
"The constraints of the site, its location as the gateway to the Island, proximity to the SSA terminal, and flood prone Five Corners make this an impossible design challenge for the scale Stop & Shop seems to have in mind. Will the MVC really approve a 20,000 sq.ft. enlargement of the store there? Parking anyone? This wouldn’t be 10 lb in a 5 lb bag. More like 25 lb. Talk about changing the character of the Island."
— Richard Knabel on proposals to renovate the Vineyard Haven Stop & Shop

Hot Topic Letter
"It was so meaningful to me to be reminded of how the Commission came into existence. Just to mention a few: the incisive roll of Henry Beetle Hough, the actual plans for a bridge connecting the Vineyard to the mainland and the proposal of part of the Island becoming a national park. Hurray for all the Vineyarders who worked so hard to maintain local governance through creating the MV Commission with the help of our state government."
— Jean Hay writes to us about the Martha’s Vineyard Commission celebrating 50 years with an exhibit at Featherstone

Today:

Pickleball players get their party started with Millennial Pickleball Night at Airport Fitness. I understand you can be "iced out" if you’re not careful. May the force be with you. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: There’s an open meeting of the Vineyard Haven Cultural District at the Katharine Cornell Theater. They’re talking about expanding the Art Walk/Gallery Hop, which sounds like a lovely idea. 6 pm. –C.B.

Winter’s crossing
Winter Muric is what could be referred to as a Renaissance woman with many interests. Among them, traveling from the mainland to the Vineyard every weekday to attend the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School in West Tisbury as a part of school choice. Among her passions for writing and the arts, she embraces the challenge of a commuter life. Read that story here.
