Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Some inspiration for your second day of the year: Mahatma Gandhi began his march for peace in East Bengal on this day in 1947; and the Industrial Workers of the World officially formed as a union in 1905; and in 2024, we all returned to work. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

New year, no power
Despite having a goal to deliver power by 2023, Vineyard Wind still hasn’t done so. A spokesperson from Avangrid says there are still some tests required before power can be transmitted to the grid. It is uncertain when this will take place, or how much the project timeline will be impacted. Get the details here.
Everybody’s gone birding
This year, Vineyard volunteers have spotted 126 species and over 30,000 birds as part of the Island’s annual contribution to the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Notable finds this year include a black-throated blue warbler, a merlin, and more. Check that out here.

Happy 100th birthday
On New Year’s Day, Clarence Bannister celebrated his 100th birthday. He’s a U.S. Army veteran and served during World War II. His sons relayed details about the soldier to The Times and the plans they had in store. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Our DPW is chronically short handed and they can’t possibly get out there and clean 639 drains all the time. So, we decided we would take on this project."

Hot Topic Comment

Hot Topic Letter
"Mr. Gatchell, your labor of love is felt by everyone who drives by your house each year. I have personally been enjoying your display since I was a child growing up here in the 80s & 90s, and now I get to share it with my daughters. Your efforts are so appreciated."
— Tonya Katz of Oak Bluffs writes to us about a holiday light display

Today: It’s a new year and if you’re looking to try something new, check out the Table Tennis Club at MVRHS. It’s seriously a great workout and fun at the same time. You won’t even know you’re exercising. Free. 5 to 8 pm. –Connie Berry

Dinks and Drinks at Airport Fitness are happening. Play pickleball and bring your own beverage to enjoy in the lounge after your pickleball playing is over. I know all about the drinks, less about the dinks. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The Chilmark library brings us The Long Game with Jim Lobley. This session is all about eating for longevity. He’ll talk about the Mediterranean diet and intermittent fasting. Sounds perfect for the new year. Virtual, but you can watch at the library if you like. 4 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Start off the new year with a bit of luck by making a traditional recipe for Caribbean-style Hoppin' John, a dish of rice, black-eyed peas, and seasonings. For extra good fortune, folklore suggests eating it with cooked greens and cornbread, tossing in a shiny dime, leaving three peas on your plate, and having leftovers, which are called Skippin' Jenny.

M.V. Museum celebrates 100
Following its centennial milestone, the M.V. Museum reflects on this year’s exhibits. Through the display of wooden boats and the processes used to make them, the "1923: A Kid's Life" exhibit explores the lives of children 100 years ago, including records of M.V. Sign Language. The director of programming and audience engagement, Laurel Redington, says there is always something to learn from the past. Read more here.
