Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s National Red Mitten Day, and by the looks of our MV Times outdoor thermometer, we really celebrated it today. For St. Louis baseball fans, it’s Stan Musial’s birthday, and a little closer to home, we say Happy Birthday to Livingston Taylor today. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
Another Tisbury settlement The town of Tisbury agreed to pay a former police candidate $75,000 to dismiss a lawsuit that claimed the town conspired with a member of the police department to freeze her out of a job. It marks the third time in four years that a related complaint against the Tisbury Police department resulted in a pay out from the town. Read about that story here.
‘Abhorrent’ free speech That’s what Cape and Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois said of a man carrying a sign with a swastika to a rally at Five Corners. Still, the D.A., who was looking into the incident, said he will not be bringing an investigation. Tisbury police have also wrapped up their investigation and will not be bringing charges. Read more about their investigation and who was behind the disruption here.
Climbing budgets School budgets are on the rise and local officials are looking for ways to keep costs down. However, staffing expenses and projects make it a
difficult endeavor. Get the details here.

The MVTimes: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day "While [this] exercise of free speech is abhorrent, no crime was committed." — Cape & Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois on a man carrying a sign with a swastika on it to a demonstration
Hot Topic Comment "We all agree about the tragedy of the loss of innocent lives – Israeli and Palestinian – but calling the response to Oct 6 a genocide seems rather naive given the situation at hand." — Mike Kelfer on the ceasefire demonstration met by a counter-protester
Hot Topic Letter "I pray to God for a ceasefire. I was in no way protesting a ceasefire or calling Palestinians Nazis. I was protesting the one sided imagery at the event. I want people to think before they use terms like
genocide. I want people to think about what the message looks like when only one flag is being flown. In this case it looked like it was dripping in antisemitism." — Christian Quebec writes to us about why he brought a certain sign to the ceasefire demonstration on Sunday
Today:It seems to me that these two events tonight would be really great if they were combined. And they both begin at 6 pm. Open Mic Night at Island Music in Vineyard Haven is free and open to everyone. –Connie Berry
Then up-Island we have Pizza Night at the Chilmark Community Church. Also free and open to everyone. Maybe they could converge at the halfway point and eat pizza and listen to live music? 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:My Aunt Betty had a full-blown Christmas village on display in her old Victorian house. Everyone loved it. Hence, I plan to make a pilgrimage to the Dickens Christmas Village Display at the Carnegie this year. I love anything miniature, including marshmallows and chocolate bars. 10 am to 4 pm. –C.B.
