Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
What do Marie Curie, Leon Trotsky, Albert Camus, and Johnny Rivers have in common? They all celebrated birthdays today at one time or another. That’s some complicated company right there. Also on this day in 1916, Jeannette Rankin won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first woman elected to Congress. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Dike bridge dispute intensifies
The dispute between the Town of Edgartown and the Trustees of Reservations over who will pay for the $4 million repairs to the Dike bridge on Chappy intensified again this week. The Trustees provided documentation showing that the town, in 1950, agreed to take over maintenance of the bridge. It’s made more complicated with the town’s select board calling on local regulators to condition their approval of a beach management plan on funding bridge repairs with sticker revenue. Read that story here.
Super review
Martha's Vineyard superintendent Richie Smith received high praise from the All-Island School Committee for his performance in the position. Now, Smith will need to work with other officials to enact goals for the following year. Additionally, the Vineyard's public school system may be seeing a spike in shared services costs. Get the details here.

South Coast commuting
SeaStreak officially cut the ribbon on its new commuter service between New Bedford and Vineyard Haven. The service includes daily passage leaving early in the morning from New Bedford and a return trip in the late afternoon. The Island chamber says that it’s a piece in the larger puzzle to provide the workforce needed on the Island, not just for businesses, but schools and health care. Read our coverage here.

Revisiting a bestseller
Remember Peter Kramer’s landmark 1993 book "Listening to Prozac: A Psychiatrist Explores Antidepressant Drugs and the Remaking of the Self"? Hard to believe that it was first published 30 years ago. His new edition, with an updated introduction and afterword, examines progress in scientific studies, as well as trends in the use and public understanding of antidepressants, and also looks at potential breakthroughs in the treatment of depression.
