Lagoon blooms hinder aquacultureAquaculture farmers in Tisbury say that the current regulations are threatening their viability. Among a number of proposed changes, they want to be able to grow oysters on the surface of the Lagoon, at least during the summer months. That’s when algae blooms can choke off oxygen for their shellfish on the bottom of the waterbody. Read that story here.

'Embarrassing' That was one of the ways the West Tisbury select board described how the town’s affordable housing committee conducted itself during a recent special town meeting. However, there were also other issues the committee needed to tackle to improve itself. The town added two associate members to the committee to help with that process. Get the details here.

Booze plan not cleared for takeoffA concession stand operator at the Vineyard airport was hoping to sell beer and wine, with profits potentially going to help retain staff at the airport. But town officials in West Tisbury are raising a possible issue. The town only grants

Quote of the Day "I think everybody in the profession understands that it’s an inevitability — not a bad one." — Edgartown Chief of Police Bruce McNamee on body cameras for police officersHot Topic Comment"What a great story about Claus. We loved having him at the Aquinnah Artisans fair this December. He is truly passionate about his art and is so good at it. I have several of his pieces and I love them!" — Gabbi Camilleri comments on our story about an Island high schooler making
potteryHot Topic Letter"Public transportation is expensive and essential. This is the reason many states have subsidies for such public service sectors as maritime freight traffic. It is time for the
Massachusetts legislature to step in and subsidize the SSA and other third-party freight shippers in order to strengthen regional planning and cooperation." — Suzanne Kuffler writes to us about providing subsidies for the Steamship Authority

Today: Philip Weinstein leads Known and Unknown Worlds: Fiction of the 21st
Century virtually via the Vineyard Haven library. First novel up: Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections." Remember he didn’t want to be on Oprah's book list? I kind of like that about him. And he grew up in Webster Groves, Mo., not too far from where I grew up. 6 pm. –Connie Berry
I’d love to see "Fallen Leaves." I’m no professional, but my synopsis would be "two lonely hearts meet and try to find their way together." It won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
