Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
March is certainly going out like a lion with winter trying to get a last lick in. As you’ll see in today’s Minute, more struggles for the Steamship with strong winds this morning. Heavier rain is on its way, but the forecast for the weekend is looking nice. Too soon? If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Dukes County Commission

Dukes County Commission dedicated 3.6 million dollars in ARPA funds to help meet current and upcoming regulations, sleep better, reduce your enviornmental footprint, and establish a Vineyard for the future.
Critical investments
Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky took it upon himself to go after a little more than a million dollars in federal funding that is coming to the Island hospital. He flags the funding on his Shameful 16 list. But Vineyard hospital officials say the funding is critical, as it will help the hospital with a rising demand. Read that story here.
Davis goes to D.C.
The Steamship Authority’s head honcho recently went to Washington, D.C., to talk with lawmakers about a proposed vessel speed restriction. The proposed regulation, meant to protect North Atlantic right whales from vessel strikes, could bring detrimental impacts to the SSA’s operations, according to the ferry service’s officials. Read more here.

A quiet place
Children’s Cove on the Cape has partnered with Martha’s Vineyard Community Services' CONNECT to End Violence Program in an effort to provide a space for child sexual abuse victims to tell their stories on-Island, removing what advocates say is a significant barrier to getting help. They’ve already seen progress. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"We’re proud of all of our staff and their ability and dedication in delivering the best newspaper and magazines we can [...] Being recognized for our efforts seems like icing on the cake, and we’re happy that our former editor was recognized as well as our work this past year. On to next year!"
— Times managing editor Connie Berry in response to
MVTimes recognition at the New England Newspaper and Press Association annual award ceremony

Hot Topic Comment
"Some months ago, MV SSA governor Jim Malkin asked steamship general manager Robert Davis about his plan to deal with crew competition as offshore wind development ramped up and created new demand for maritime crew. Mr. Davis said he didn’t anticipate a problem – as in, there is no plan. And now here we are faced with repeated cancellations due to crew shortages. I can’t remember a time in the past when this was as critical as an issue as it is now. Thank you, Jim Malkin, for your foresight to ask the questions. Now what? When do we decide enough is enough?"
— Ebba Rene Hierta on
another day of SSA cancellations

Hot Topic Letter
"If the existing lawn is unavailable for more than a year, the Edgartown Croquet Club will have no venue, and will likely die out. Once it is gone, the century-long tradition of tournament-style croquet on Martha’s Vineyard will be lost."
— Edgartown Croquet Club president Cecily Greenway on the long-term effects of the
potential loss of the Croquet Club’s court
