Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

IHT is working hard to make sure Island residents have the year-round homes they need. But the demand is still greater than the supply.
An ad aboard a Steamship Authority vessel caught the eye of Islanders, and they aren’t happy with the messaging. Made by PETA, the ad targets the commercial fishing industry, mainly lobsters, and brings attention to the plight of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. However, some Island fishermen say the ad is an unfair hit on lobstermen. Read more here.
Aquinnah’s warrant
Aquinnah town meeting will be held at Aquinnah Town Hall tomorrow at 7 pm. Town officials and residents are preparing for votes on 20 articles, covering the creation of a new affordable housing trust fund, potential funding for community preservation, the possibility of dredging to combat erosion at West Basin, and voters will be asked to pay for repairs to town buildings. Original ‘Scream Queen’ dies
Susan Backlinie, best known for the unforgettable opening scene of "Jaws," died Saturday at 77. Backlinie was the shark’s first victim and is depicted on the film’s iconic movie poster. The Times talked with the Islander that played the guitarist in the bonfire scene and recognizes Backlinie’s impact in the film. Read more here.

Hot Topic Letter
"Given the rate that our modern world creates waste, the ocean is constantly delivering ever more trash to our shores. Hundreds of bags, and thousands of pounds, of trash were collected from the beaches during this year’s Clean-Up, but we’re very happy to share that the feedback from our long-time volunteers was pretty consistent in saying that it was substantially less than usual."
— Signe Benjamin on this year’s Earth Day beach clean-up

Crossing through curiosity
On his kayak journey across Squibnocket Pond, Jonathan Burke takes us on a water tour merged with curiosity. Does Burke see an alligator or an old duck blind? His slight vertigo deftly carries us across the pond to the ocean, to a culvert and back to his beginning. Tour with him here.
