New rules
There may be new rules when it comes to septic systems and the amount of nitrogen coming from those systems. But it seems like the impact of these proposed regulations will be less severe on the Island compared to Cape Cod where some property owners will be required to replace septic systems costing them thousands of dollars. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo sat through a recent presentation and there are others on the horizon. Here’s his story.
Third time’s a charm
Well, it’s at least a budget. School officials struggled with the idea that their proposed budget was too high, but when they attempted to make cuts at the Chilmark School and West Tisbury School they found it too difficult. So on Monday, the up-Island school committee approved a 5.61% budget increase that will now go to a public hearing and then ultimately will go to the town meetings in the spring. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update.

The Chilmark select board has set a timeline for replacing Police Chief Jonathan Klaren. Klaren announced his retirement and is leaving the department in March after six years in the top job. The select board appointed the same review committee it used to select Klaren, and the job has been posted. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Quote of the Day
"This is really going to be a game changer in Vineyard Haven. For the first time, there will be a place where people coming off the ferry can actually see, and can be attracted to."
–Developer Sam Dunn on the proposal to have a Mexican restaurant at the Old Stone Bank development that’s currently under construction

Hot Topic Comment
Brian Athearn commented on the short-term rental issue on the Island. "I really believe the elephant in the room is that very few want to rent to year round people. The liability and mass renter laws are so stringent that people are having to pay thousands in utilities and services, while the renters don’t pay rent and are difficult to evict. not to mention the damages that far exceed a security deposit."

Hot Topic Letter
Donna Blackburn offers some warm thoughts about rallying volunteers to make blankets for Ukraine. "I put out a poster asking those interested in helping out to either sew, knit, crochet, or quilt baby and toddler sized blankets over the summer to be collected by the projects end on September 30, 2022. I was amazed at what followed over the weeks to come!"
Today: I love a little quiet before a storm, don’t you? The Chilmark Community Church hosts A Quiet Christmas Service: Winter Solstice Reflection. It’s billed as a worship service of healing, hope, and light. I could use a dose of all three. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Home sweet home
A Gingerbread House Making Competition was held at the Oak Bluffs library this past Saturday, and it was a sweet success. Delicious cookie homes were adorned with gumdrops, sprinkles, marshmallows, and much more. Although every team made some amazing creations, one family did come out on top, with an impressive gingerbread village complete with walkways and a centerpiece fountain. Read Lucas Thors’ story on the fun event, and check out some great pictures by Collette Jordan here.
