Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s National Taco Day. We thought that was supposed to happen on Tuesdays. We’ll take them anytime. It’s also the birthday of Damon Runyan, a journalist of yore. He gave us "Guys and Dolls," and for that we’re grateful. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

High school intervention due to subgroup absenteeism The high school’s recent classification as being "a school in need of intervention" is due to subgroup absenteeism and low participation rates in a small number of students, according to MVRHS principal Sara Dingledy. Still, the school is in the 44th percentile of schools in the state, meaning it only performed equal to or better than 44 percent of schools in Massachusetts. Read more about the school’s absenteeism and accountability report here.
Oak Bluffs planning for wastewater Oak Bluffs is making preparations to make upgrades to its wastewater treatment facility, an initial step for the town’s comprehensive wastewater management plan. Nitrogen reduction is one of the key parts of why the town wants to improve the wastewater system. Read more here.
Chilmark relocation The Chilmark School is temporarily relocating its kindergartners through third graders to the Chilmark Community Center, as interior work is completed in classrooms during the school's HVAC project. Kindergartners and first graders are relocated now through next week, and second and third graders will be relocated the following two weeks. Principal Susan Stevens reports minimal disruption to students, and some extra considerations required from teachers. Read more here.

Hot Topic Comment "Currently
disabled passengers not in an automobile have to disembark by taking the elevator down to the freight deck and exiting through the exit that cars take. On good dockingsThere is no place to sit down nor a place to hang on while a ferry is docking. In other words in the best of landings there is no place to sit or stand and hang on. And during a hard landing these fragile humans are at risk because of the lack of a policy to help the disabled." — Kristin Zern comments after a Steamship vessel suffered hull damage while docking
Hot Topic Letter "These zoning reform initiatives, which include a proposal to allow industrial uses where none are currently allowed and if passed by a 2/3 vote in April 2024, will have a lasting effect on our town and Island community. Therefore, the public needs to be made better aware of them. Other than the Planning Board website, there has been very little public notification about these hearings." — Pat Ingalls writes to us about the need for more publicity on a zoning reform initiative in Oak Bluffs

Artist Althea Freeman-Miller’s community dreaming Island artist Althea Freeman-Miller is right next door to the MV Times, and we decided to take a walk over to Althea Designs to see what she’s up to. She’s a great example of how artists can make "a life full of art for themselves." Althea is interested in inspiring others, so much so that she’s deeply involved in Vineyard Haven’s town planning. She envisions commerce, culture, and town government all working together. Read about Althea’s ideas and art here.
