Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1984, Geraldine Ferraro was nominated for vice president by the Democratic party. Who would have imagined it would take until 2020 to elect a woman vice president? Today is Cow Appreciation Day. Time for a ride up-Island. We plan to celebrate with a dairy
treat like ice cream. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Going to bat The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks took an opportunity on Monday night to do more than just entertain a summer crowd with an action-packed baseball game. They auctioned off specially made jerseys to raise money and awareness for Island Autism Group. Two Island Autism Group members threw out the ceremonial first pitches, and the jerseys of Sharks players were auctioned off for the cause. Intern Anna Nesser was there for all the action and has this story.
Crunching numbers The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission discussed a draft on its regional spending policy at a meeting on Monday. The policy would determine how to best divvy up the money that is controlled by local towns as the Land Bank moves forward with acquisitions. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update.
Out of step The Dock Dance Band wanted to hold dances at Memorial Wharf on Wednesday nights, but the police department — citing staffing issues — offered Sundays instead. With the two sides at an impasse, the select board in Edgartown sided with the chief and urged the band to compromise. Meanwhile, the fire department promoted a couple of firefighters in the ranks. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.
BONUS PHOTO: Former President Barack Obama, a seasonal resident of Edgartown, has been making the rounds and playing some rounds on the Vineyard in recent weeks. The former president was spotted playing golf at Farm Neck on Sunday. The eagle-eyed photographer asked to remain anonymous.

Hot Topic Letter Charles Pinck, who you may know as someone who submits cartoons to The Times, wrote to offer a new way to know it’s summer on the Vineyard. "Instead of recognizing the longest day of the year as the beginning of summer, we should recognize the most long-suffering day of the year when Alan Dershowitz whines yet again about being shunned on Martha’s Vineyard."

Cup runneth over If you were on the water anywhere near Vineyard Haven Harbor on Saturday or Sunday, you likely saw some beautiful sailboats. Well, it wasn’t just routine sailing. The boats were competing in Sail MV’s annual Vineyard Cup Regatta. The event also included a seafood buffet and auction, which provided funding for Sail MV’s free sailing lessons for Island youth. Editor George Brennan has the story and the results.
