Where eagles dare
A local bird expert says that it’s only a matter of time before bald eagles start nesting on the Vineyard. But so far, the few that have tried have been displaced by another Island raptor: the viciously territorial osprey. Find out what happens when the two birds of prey meet in the spring, and what to do if bald eagles nest near you. Check that out here.
Electrifying buses
The MVRHS and up-Island regional school districts are pursuing an EPA grant to acquire electric buses. Various factors had to be considered by school officials, such as costs, infrastructure capacity, and input from the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe. Read more here.

A taxi debate
The Tisbury select board is investigating whether a sixth and final taxi license is available in the town, after a company requested that they get the license. Owners of other cab companies are additionally concerned that the town barely has room for them to park near the ferry. They worry that another cab company could oversaturate the market. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"People already complain that all these decisions are made by a small group of people, and we’re making this group of people even smaller."
— Select board vice-chair Jessica Miller on reducing the quorum needed at town meeting

Hot Topic Comment
"It’s very perplexing that we want to put a layer of plastic grass over the soil over the aquifer. Are we going to have another fiasco over the school budget this spring? Speaking of the environment, where does this stuff go when it wears out in a few years?"
— Marie Laursen on the planning board likely dropping its turf appeal

Hot Topic Letter
"I’m not sure we need to revise the regulations regarding henhouse security to accommodate the needs of the foxes. There is essentially nothing wrong with the regulations, as they are currently written."
— David Forbes writes in protest of the proposed shellfish regulations in Tisbury

Today: Let the music move us, eh? John O’Toole and Loose Fit play at Pathways tonight. Wish my jeans were loose fit. The door opens at 6:30 pm. Free, but a donation is nice. –Connie Berry

I do but I don’t want to see "Poor Things," playing at the M.V. Film Center. It looks racy, yet really amusing. I love all the actors, especially Mark Ruffalo. He usually plays such great characters, but I think he might be a jerk in this one. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
This weekend: Go take a hike Saturday morning. Really. The Trustees offer a Brickyard Hike and Exploration in Chilmark. You’ll learn a lot along the way. Preregister. 9 am. I am pumped about this one: Furs, winter coats, sweaters, men's sportcoats, and more on sale at the M.V. Playhouse’s Winter Sale. They’re from the wardrobe collection. Proceeds benefit the Playhouse. 10 am to 1 pm. Itching for a weekend gallery visit? Louisa Gould Gallery has the Flowers for Winter exhibit by gallery artists. 11 am to 5 pm. Met Opera Live at the Film Center plays "Carmen," a favorite. 12:55 pm start time. Join the wonderful Alex Karalekas and pals at the Chilmark Potluck Jam at the Chilmark Community Center. Bring food to share and enjoy music by too many fantastic musicians to type here. Read the link. 6 to 10 pm. Down-Island we’ve got an Open Mic Coffee House at the M.V. Hebrew Center. Love open mics. Coffee and dessert too. 7 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, the Unitarian Universalist Society’s Rev. Janet Newton talks about "When We Belong to One Another: Healing, Wholeness, Holiness, and Love." In person or online. 10 am. Emily Davis shared her Leaf Art at the West Tisbury library for the month of January, with a closing reception this Sunday from noon to 2 pm. Free. Learn from one of my favorite artists, Elizabeth Whelan, in How to Draw Snowy Scenes at the Vineyard Haven library. Bring your sketch pad and supplies. 1 to 3 pm. Join Chef Brent Turner from Rosewater for this week's Joyful Eatings at the Federated Church. Volunteers learn how to cook dishes from a chef, then the results go to the Harbor Homes overnight shelter. Lovely program. Follow directions to see about volunteering some way. 2:30 pm. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling really waterlogged. And doesn’t that add more weight on the scale, because I’m going with that excuse. Have a great weekend, and be sure to make time to relax. –C.B.

Trees are important
In our latest Climate Connections column, we’re talking trees. Some of the most alarming facts about climate change have to do with these mighty plants, such as the deforestation rate. In 2019 alone, we lost 29 million acres of tree cover — equal to a soccer field of trees every six seconds. Read that story here.
