Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is Earth Day, and Islanders know how important the environment is to the Vineyard. People come out in force to help keep the Island clean, especially the beaches, during this time of the year. Hopefully we can do our parts to keep Martha’s Vineyard healthy and beautiful. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

With IHT's help a year-round homeowner downsized and stayed on the island, and two Vineyard families purchased year-round affordable homes. Watch to see how we did it! You can help build more urgently needed affordable housing on Martha's Vineyard. Click here to donate now.
Path to visas
Anyone who’s had to deal with governmental paperwork knows it’s a long process, and that’s also the case for the asylum seekers who arrived on the Vineyard nearly two years ago. The asylum seekers are in the pipeline for visas that will allow them to stay in the United States. For now, some have received work authorization and are protected until the visa process is completed. Read more here.
Tennis managers grilled
The council overseeing tennis program at the Chilmark Community Center came under fire this past weekend during a meeting that they organized. Several in the community raised concerns with leadership, supporting a tennis pro that seems to be the center of the dispute. The council was also criticized for a video that has flared tensions around the issue even more. Read that story here.

Let them have tents
Harbor Homes winter shelter closed for the season over the weekend. The nonprofit hosted an open house and a walk to raise awareness for the demand for the shelter on Saturday. One takeaway: the residents that are forced to go elsewhere with the season closing were given tents, and we are told that many of them end up in the State Forest. Read that story here.
MEETINGS
The Steamship Authority board meets on Tuesday at 10 am. Here is the agenda.

The Oak Bluffs select board meets on Tuesday at 4:30 pm. Here is the agenda.

Also, the Chilmark annual town meeting is on Tuesday at 7 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. Here is the warrant.

"I’m just glad nobody was hurt."
— Tisbury Police Lt. Bill Brigham on the collision of a dump truck that hit a utility pole on State Road

Hot Topic Comment
"As a longtime, non-white member of the Chilmark tennis community, I am deeply troubled by this video. Characterizing the hundreds of us who wish to see a healthy culture at the CTAC where members and staff members are treated with basic respect as somehow stuck in reverse sets us all back."
— Joshua Thomson on the release of a video surrounding the Chilmark tennis court debate

Hot Topic Letter
"I raised my son to take off his hat inside and give up his seat to an older woman. I guess those were the good old days."
— Irene Ziebarth calls for more chivalry and common decency on public transit

The dandelion debate
Whether dandelions are friends or foes has been a long-standing debate, writes our Wild Side columnist Matt Pelikan. On the one hand, the dandelion has been seen as a pernicious weed. On the other, it has healing properties, it can be a substitute for coffee, and it can be turned into wine. But a lot of what you may think about dandelions is apparently not true. Read that story here.
