Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is May Day, a day commemorating the changing of the seasons toward summer. And the weather has certainly been improving. Today is also International Sunflower Guerilla Gardening Day. Maybe not sunflowers, but we know a whole bunch of daffodils were planted guerilla-style across the Island. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Prosecutor violates law
The State Ethics Commission found the Cape and Islands district attorney in violation of the conflict of interest law in two separate instances, in a decision announced today. The DA has paid a civil penalty of $5,000 for the violations. Read more here.
Nipped in the bud
As of today, nip bottles are no longer for sale on Martha’s Vineyard. Voters had passed it as a way to cut down on the amount of littering on the Island. However, the measure still doesn’t address the issue for people who may struggle with alcoholism. Read more here.

New DQ owners crowned
The Edgartown Dairy Queen will be under new management, and they’re raring to hit the ground running this summer. Although opening a bit later this season than usual, the new owners hope to keep the frozen treats eatery a place for the whole community. Get the details here.

Quote of the Day
"I’m hoping to stay connected to the people as much as possible … I hope to remain as accessible and present with the actual communities that we serve."
—Bethany Hammond on being the
new Up-Island Council on Aging director

Hot Topic Comment
"That’s interesting that he is naming the restaurant Menotomy, and the reason why. Unless you’re from Arlington, as I am, you rarely know the story of the Battle of Menotomy, and that it was the original name of the town."
—Debbie Frio on the
new restaurant planned in Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Letter
"Stop forcing citizens to sit through hours of noncontroversial warrant articles being read out like endless dates in a bad history class. Much antigovernment sentiment — in a nation that is supposed to be self-governing — lies in clunky, overly bureaucratic operations like this."
—Anne Cook on a
need to change town meeting structures

Today: Island beekeepers are invited to the M.V. Beekeeping Club’s monthly meeting at the Ag Hall. Wonder if they serve snacks with honey, because that matters to me. I’d love to keep bees if I wasn’t slightly terrified of them. Maybe I should learn more. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Paula Lyons hosts Arnie’s Poetry Cafe at the M.V. Playhouse. This week guest poets include Steve Ewing, Christopher Legge, Fan Ogilvie, Liz Pozen, and Rose Styron. Free. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Looking to introduce yoga to your littlest family members? Try it out at West Tisbury library's Family Yoga for ages 0 to 5. You can just show up, no need to register. 11 am. And if your littles are bigger, try Family Yoga at the Chilmark library for ages 4 to 8 at 3 pm. –C.B.
