Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in history in 1969, Woodstock, likely the most famous music festival, began three days of peace, love, music, mud, and crowds. We know a thing or two about crowds here in August. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
COVID returns The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital held a media briefing today to spread the word that COVID-19 infections have increased around the nation, state, and locally. They do also say that the severity of the illness is much lower than the beginning of pandemic, and the hospital says this is likely due to an increase in the use of vaccines. Read our coverage here.
Slipped The Steamship Authority has revealed why the Sankaty floated off to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s dock last month. One of the ropes slipped off a bollard, starting the incident. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "It was such an honor to welcome a dignitary as important as the vice president of the U.S. to our tribal homelands." — Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais on welcoming the vice president to Martha’s Vineyard this weekend
Hot Topic Comment Joan Malkin, chair of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, comments on a story about the controversial turf field debate: "I made a very thoughtless comment about guns and violence. Intended to be light-hearted and in the moment, I failed to consider the potential implications of
my remark in light of the gun violence facing our country. Although the comment has been interpreted as an indication of an anti-turf bias, that could not have been further from my mind. I meant no disrespect to either side in this contentious Island issue."
Hot Topic Letter Nat Benjamin writes to us in remembrance of Jim Lobdell:"During Jim’s long and devoted chairmanship of the harbor management committee, he led the charge to create and implement a comprehensive plan for the harbor and
commercial waterfront district. Thanks to his leadership, the Tisbury waterfront remains a vital and sustainable year-round working seaport, accessible to citizens of our Island as well as to summer visitors."
Today:I have high hopes that the rain will be gone and we can enjoy Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at the Edgartown library’s Sounds Like Summer. Bring the kids, they like to dance too. 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry
M.V. Playhouse presents the premiere of "The Outcasts of Penikese Island," about Hansen’s disease patients isolated on the island in the early 1900s. Sounds fascinating. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:You know what happens Wednesday: "The Crown Jewel of the Campground Season." Grand Illumination technically begins at the Tabernacle with a community sing, followed by lighting of the first lantern and then the somewhat-crowded-but-beautiful stroll through the Campground. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Flowers in the Abstract Bruce Mathews transforms floral specimens into works of art. His photography show, "Flowers When No One’s Looking," at the Edgartown library runs through the end of August. Our reviewer writes: "With his unique vision, Mathews gives us an alternate vision of the botanical world that brings nature to a high art." Read more here.
