Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. The landmark law was signed by President Nixon, and requires federal and state law enforcement to protect all species threatened with extinction. Likely thanks to the Act, you may see a bald eagle around the Island here and there, or a piping plover. Also, the MV Times office is closed Friday and Monday, which means no Minute. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

The Year in Review
We take a look back at the top Island news stories of 2023 by the numbers. For just a recap, there were two plane crash landings, nearly 18,000 pounds of fish caught during the Derby, nip bottles were banned, Pfizer discontinued its lyme vaccine trials on the Island, and a massive freight boat floated away from its slip. Look at our year in review here.

Oak Bluffs explosion
Firefighters responded to the report of an explosion at an Oak Bluffs scrapyard Wednesday evening. No one was injured, but emergency responders say that a blaze burned through two buses, multiple junked vehicles, and trailers. It took firefighters about 3 hours to clear the scene. Read that story here.

Keeping Tisbury clean
Tisbury is launching a new way for residents to get involved in keeping ponds clean. The Adopt a Drain program lets people monitor and keep a storm drain clean. This is an effort by Tisbury Waterways to reduce pollutants from getting into bodies of water in Tisbury. Get the details here.

Water view Land, West Tisbury Sponsored

The Tower Hill land, once known as the Dancing Hills, is considered by many a sacred Island space. Standing on the ridge top, you're at one of the highest points on Martha's Vineyard. This 3.01-acre parcel looks out over the trees of Red Farm and the dramatic blue expanse of Vineyard Sound. It's easy to understand why this property is so special. There's a generous, designated, building envelope of 1.41 acres to allow a buyer to build a significant house with multi-level views of the water, as well as additional structures with proper permitting. Thoughtful planning and preparation of the Tower Hill Declaration for the area creates a deeded view easement and a greenbelt area to preserve the serenity, privacy, and experience of being surrounded by nature, while still being minutes away from West Tisbury center. The abutting lots have already been developed, demonstrating the type of home, landscape, and views possible for 38 Fire Tower Road. The property is staked, and surveyed with paths cleared to make showing easy. NHESP requirements met. Perc test and well are in.
Quote of the Day
"For newspapers to change hands these days is not a simple matter of buyers meeting sellers. Newspapers need vast change — as the poet said, "you’d better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone" — and buyers, even community-minded buyers, don’t readily step up to the bar. That’s where Steve Bernier fits in: a community guy through and through, a lover of what The Times means to the Vineyard. And Charlie, with a unique journalism talent at the right moment in Times history."
— MV Times owners and publishers Peter and Barbara Oberfest

Staying in?
To find a nourishing balance during the dry, colder months, try Chef Jacqueline Foster's Ayurveda-based soup recipes: Winter Congee (Rice Porridge) and Bone Broth. The intuitive Goldilocks principle of "just right" may be the key to finding your seasonal center.

Merry lights
Just before Christmas, the Vineyard Transit dedicated a "special bus" to take non-driving Vineyarders on an after-dark tour of holiday lights and other festivities. The highlight was a stop to view the famous Gatchell house ablaze with lights after dark — a sight that bus-dependent riders are deprived of because no regularly scheduled bus route passes the house at night. Here is their story.
