Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Massachusetts became the sixth state on this date in 1788. Happy birthday to Babe Ruth, President Ronald Reagan, Bob Marley, Aaron Burr, and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Oh, and Axl Rose. We always forget him, but we never forget "Sweet Child of Mine" as performed by Adam Scott in the
movie "Step Brothers." If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
With IHT’s help a year-round homeowner downsized and stayed on the Island and two Vineyard families purchased year-round affordable homes. Watch to see how we did it! You can help build more urgently needed affordable housing on Martha’s Vineyard. Click here to donate now.
OB

State police had not released her identity as of Monday afternoon, but say that she lived alone. There’s been no cause of death yet determined, but police say she was outside of her home in freezing temperatures for an extended period of time. Eunki Seonwoo has the story here.
Brrr! Although Saturday’s temperature wasn’t record-breaking for the Island, NOAA reps say temperatures dipped to -5 degrees in the early hours of Saturday. That, combined with 53 MPH winds, made for some excruciatingly frigid few days. Abigail Rosen has this update.

The announcement prompted several Island vets to issue a statement, warning that care for pets will be diminishing with the closure. Some say that a lack of housing and other issues have made it difficult to recruit younger vets to the Island. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the story.

On
pilgrimage About 20 years ago, Connie Berry embarked on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, with the North American Lourdes Volunteers. She was to write about the experience, and was able to bring her two youngest children. While in Lourdes, Berry took part in the ancient tradition of St. Bernadette Soubirous’ feast day on Feb. 18, and even bathed in the healing waters that the Blessed Virgin Mary told St. Bernadette to drink from in 1858.
