Short term rental talk
Short-term rentals are nothing new for the Vineyard, but they are increasingly becoming an issue that needs to be addressed. Tisbury is a town that is looking at possible ways to regulate this market. The town’s affordable housing committee is also looking at how to best regulate accessory dwelling units, a potential option to address year-round housing. The committee recently held a forum to talk with townsfolk about the matter at the Vineyard Haven library. Read more here.
Chilmark’s annual election
Chilmark voters go to the polls next Wednesday to choose a new select board member. Two candidates, Jeffrey Maida and William Meegan, are vying for one seat. We asked the candidates a number of questions, from maintaining the rural character of the up-Island town to how to regulate short term-rentals. Here are their responses.

Fruits of a guerrilla gardener
Vineyard Haven resident Melly Meadows planted over 10,000 daffodil bulbs across the Island over the winter — including in front of the Tisbury Post Office — and they are starting to bloom. We also learn that her efforts made news in Atlanta. Read that story here.

The MVTimes: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?

Spectacular 35-acre Boldwater Association waterfront estate on Edgartown Great Pond with breathtaking views over 1,000 ft. wide, including a low, brushy pond in the front terrain, the 3/4-mile wide Lyles Bay, dreamy Swan Neck Point, the 1 1/2-mile wide main pond, and a barrier beach to the ocean beyond. The handful of well-pruned trees on the property enhance the water views. The sophisticated and charming quality house was built by Andrew Flake, arguably the finest Vineyard builder over the last 40 years. Mark Hutker created an innovative design with an arc-shape nautical theme, so every room faces the water. The 3 second-floor bedrooms enjoy large terraces, and the primary bedroom on the first floor opens to a nice deck and a quiet garden sanctuary. The handmade, luxury, kitchen cabinetry and extensive woodworking were done by Smallbone, a British Company noted for time-honored design and craftsmanship. Adding to this estate, reflecting decades of careful planning and development, is a lovely private pool and pool house, 4-room guest suite over the garage with a large deck, two stone-wall-enclosed specimen fruit tree meadows, a large field circled by a grand stone wall, an idyllic lily pond, and two miles of private trails. Last but not least, are 14+ abutting sub-dividable acres into potentially 3-4 lots. Keep boats and small craft on your mooring at the water's edge for a short trip to the 3,000-ft. Boldwater private beach. Boldwater is 30 homesites on 450 acres with 150 acres of conservation, and it abuts approximately 1,500 acres of conservation lands and a few large estates. A most remarkable rural area convenient to town and the airport.
Quote of the Day

— Planning board member Matt Merry on encouraging younger community members to engage with West Tisbury’s master plan

Hot Topic Comment
"Maybe all it would take is some constructive dialog, a donation & some helping hands to assist w manual labor for a few weeks to achieve mutually agreed upon goals. Yes, differences really can be resolved quite simply if BOTH parties really want it."
— Mary Jane Nevin on persisting tensions over the Chilmark tennis debate

Hot Topic Letter
"Instead of reinforcing this time-worn reason for skipping town meeting, it would be refreshing if this editorial had urged voters to try a little harder, make a few more sacrifices, bring hard questions to the hearings and committee meetings where the warrant articles originate, and truly exercise their democratic rights while those rights still exist."
— Dan Waters responds to one of our recent editorials with a few quibbles

Staying in?
Here's a recipe that went viral on the internet about five years ago: Creamy Baked Feta Pasta. The original version was published by food blogger Jenni Häyrinen in Finland, which caused a shortage of feta cheese in her region.
