Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.

It’s not Halloween, but 331 years ago, in Salem, north of Boston, the first execution of the town’s witch trials was held. In 1692, Bridget Bishop was tried in an eight-day trial and found guilty of practicing witchcraft, a
charge that disproportionately targeted women. In an important step on the road for women’s rights, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Equal Pay Act on this day in 1963, which aimed at eliminating the gender wage gap. Still, the Center for American Progress projects that true gender pay equity won’t be a reality until 2056. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Dead whale washes onto South Beach A very decomposed body of a sperm whale washed onto South Beach on Friday. It is uncertain how the animal died, but the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe's Natural Resources Department will send samples to NOAA for a possible identification of the whale. South Beach’s rough waves have moved the carcass, and NOAA is hoping the decomposed animal will drift back out to sea. Read more here.

Through interviews with 30 stakeholders, they reported that a lack of communication and collaboration amongst Island towns has stilted continued progress. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "I’m really pumped about the fact that we’re going to see so many people employed just in operations and maintenance right here on the Vineyard." —Gov. Maura Healey during a tour of the Vineyard Wind I facilities in Vineyard HavenHot Topic Comment"Sounds to me like 18 hour shifts, where the public safety is involved, puts that safety at risk. Sometimes the Unions have a valid point." —Bob Morris on Teamsters union calling for fair Steamship Authority contractHot Topic Letter"We understand that prices get higher over time, but for the people living on the Island year-round, it costs way too much to
live here. Perhaps there could be a discount card for goods and services for year-round Island residents to help them with the high cost of living. Something like the Island Card, but that is free and accepted in more locations." —Six Vineyard third-graders make a case that the cost of living is too
high

Harbor history at M.V. Museum The Martha’s Vineyard Museum serves to teach us about the Island's history, to spark ideas, and to help us live with more awareness, understanding, and purpose. Each Monday in June from 5 to 6 pm, the Museum will reintroduce us to one of the Island's iconic waterfronts. Today, the museum's research librarian, Bow Van Riper, will show us the history of the Edgartown waterfront, originally known as "Great Harbour."
Next Monday, it will be all about Oak Bluffs, followed by Vineyard Haven on the 24th. Read more here.
