Retroactive demo A Tisbury property owner is seeking permission to build a new residential structure to replace a recently razed, century-old house. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission has been charged with not only reviewing the proposed construction, but also considering retroactively approving the demolition. While the local historical society says the removal of the building threatens the "vibe" of the neighborhood, direct abutters couldn’t be more
pleased that for the first time in years, the property in question will be getting some much needed attention. More on that story here.

Quote of the Day "Vaccines help bring the spread of chickenpox, and other infectious diseases, under control. Low vaccination rates introduce a vulnerability." — Martha’s Vineyard Hospital chief nurse and vice president of operations Claire Seguin on cases of chickenpox at the Charter SchoolHot Topic Comment"There are some medical conditions that prevent some people from safely getting vaccinated or be so immune compromised that vaccines don’t work for them. There are also a few legitimate religious beliefs that stop parents from vaccinating their children. That’s why herd immunity matters." — Jackie Mendez comments on a story about chickenpox at the Charter School and the high exemption rate to vaccines among Island kindergarten studentsHot Topic Letter"We are writing to express heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding success of the 10th Gay Head 10K Road Race that took place this past Sunday. The event, and all the work leading up to it, was a true testament to the power of community spirit, dedication, and support from both individuals and organizations. It was a memorable day that brought our neighbors and visitors alike together in a celebration of both athleticism (the hilly course is no joke!) and community." — Meg Athearn, Eliza Curtis, Hilary Dreyer, Casey O’Connor, Reaan Steenkamp, and Martha Vanderhoop express their gratitude on
behalf of the Gay Head 10K Race Committee

This weekend: We’ve still got the West Tisbury Farmers Market to look forward to. I went last Saturday and got an enormous bouquet of basil. 9 am to noon. Take the kids to the Fall on the Farm Festival at the Farm Institute. This is weather dependent, so read the fine print. 10 am to 2 pm. Join Tim Boland for a lecture and tour of Polly Hill Aboretum's herbarium and living plant collections to understand the Great Diversity of Oaks. 10 am. It’s a big weekend for the Vineyard Artisans at the Grange Hall. They’re open Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. The Galaxy Gallery hosts an Art Sale with 100 percent of proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity of Martha's Vineyard. 12 to 6 pm. The Strand Theater is open this weekend with "Seriously Red" playing at 1 pm. It’s a comedy, drama, musical film. Mathew Tombers welcomes you to Edgartown Books for a signing with author Frank Santo and his book "The Birth Parents." 2 pm. There’s a Photography Book Talk at the West Tisbury library with photographer and human rights activist Jonathan Moller and his book, "Young Cuba." 3:30 pm. It’s back to the Strand Theater at 4 pm for "Elvis,"
with Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. 4 pm. As a side, the Women in Film Festival is coming up soon at the Film Center. I’m psyched. –C.B.
On Sunday, the Galaxy Gallery in Oak Bluffs is having an Art Yard Sale. Artwork and art supplies are available at discount prices. 100 percent of sales go directly to the participating artists. The rain date is Monday, Oct. 9. 10 am to 3 pm. All levels of Casual Tennis happens at the courts in Vineyard Haven. You go ahead, I’m tired. 10 am. Mathew’s at it again with a book talk on Sunday with Carmen Fields and "Going Back to Town." 2 pm. The public is invited to a live, in-person jazz concert at the West Tisbury library with the Eric T. Johnson Quartet and special guest bassist John Sullivan. 2:30 pm. Grace Church hosts its annual Blessing of the Animals Service in honor of St. Francis at 4 pm. Weather permitting, the service will be held outside, but indoors at the church in the event of rain. Animals of all kinds and their human companions are welcome (even stuffed animals). A Sundays in the Park Concert at the Ocean Park Bandstand is planned for 5 pm, weather permitting. My 33-year-old baby girl is coming this weekend, so I will definitely get off the sofa this weekend. Enjoy! –C.B.

Writer's pause Or writer’s block. Whichever you prefer. We’ve all had it. In this essay by Charles Silberstein and Laura Roosevelt, they explore what different writers enjoy about writing. We also hear from an Island writer struggling to finish a book who made a quilt that has quotes about writer’s block. When she completed the quilt, she finished her book. Read that story here.
