The Island is gearing up for Memorial Day Weekend, and it looks like we’ll be having some lovely weather. Consider dropping by local businesses preparing for the summer season, and grilling a few patties on the barbeque. If you know a veteran, thank them for their service and take some time to remember the ones who aren’t here anymore. If your friend sent you this, sign up for
yourself here.

Dog ticks for
days Tick researchers on the Island are saying that so far this season, there have been a lot of dog ticks. A lot more than the other ticks, which is good and bad. Good, that dog ticks aren’t as successful delivering serious illnesses when they do bite. The reason for their prevalence this year is the environment. It’s been a relatively dry spring, and they are able to survive. Read our story here.

Tashmoo anchoring alternative Tisbury will be allowing up to twelve moorings at Lake Tashmoo, some of them being conservation moorings. While the controversial anchoring moratorium is still in effect, the town is looking at options to allow more access to Tashmoo. Get the details here.

Memorial Day prep We have a video montage that we are releasing today, where we sit down with a number of area businesses as they get ready for the weekend. As the owner of Porto Pizza told us, it’s no days off until September here on out. We also chat with them about finding enough employees, as well as housing for their staff. Watch the video here.

Quote of the Day The All-Island School Committee got a presentation from Dorothy Presser, the field director for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, on the importance of working together: "When there’s a lot of conflict, that’s where
people’s energy is focused, they're focusing on the conflict rather than the process of moving forward." Hot Topic CommentThomas Stanley comments on our story about changing rules on state roads on the Vineyard: "This island, as much of Massachusetts, is full of awful drivers, tailgaters who come up right behind you when you are driving the speed limit, people who don’t use their turn signals until the last minute if it all, and yes, those who pass without caution. Being stuck behind a moped? That blows."Hot Topic LetterIn this week’s editorial, we take on some calls to eradicate coyotes from Martha’s
Vineyard: "While there are dangers associated with the wild animals, there are also some irrational and inflated fears that should be addressed before they are taken too seriously."

This weekend: It’s the big weekend and there’s lots to do. Here are a couple ideas. If you’re a big fan of the Flying Horses in Oak Bluffs, they are having a grand reopening tomorrow. There’s a free, historic tour at 9 am
followed by a ribbon cutting at 10 am. Free rides 10 to 11 am and free popcorn all day. –S.H.
I will actually be attending M.V. Sound Fest on Sunday. I’m excited to see Toots Jr, the son of the late, great, and giver-of-the-name reggae ("Reggae got Soul"), Toots Hibbert. Toots was known for his time in the band Toots and the Maytals, and I’m excited to see how Hibbert passed his chops down. The concert is from noon to 10
pm at The Cove Golf & Grill in Vineyard Haven. –S.H.
Movies! Check out what’s playing this weekend at Island theaters here.

Move over those marinated hot dogs and marshmallow shish kebabs to leave room on the grill for such delectables as Parmesan Asparagus Fries and Grilled Eggplant Spread. About ten years ago, Vineyard chefs and foodies shared these and other recipes for Grilled Fruits and Vegetables. Enjoy the weekend and have a safe and healthy cookout!
Send us a recipe! We would love to share it with the community. Email it to recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a brief backstory and a photo of the final creation. Click here to browse more recipes from the Island community.

Age with
Action How do you age with grace? That’s at the heart of this feature about aging on the Vineyard. One stat from a Healthy Aging M.V. survey is that over 50 percent of older adults on the Island do some sort of volunteer work. "The Island would come to a standstill without them," said executive director Cindy Trish. Learn more about the nonprofit that is helping Islanders age in place and with grace. Find the story here.
