Field money problems
The MVRHS Committee is pushing to have a turf athletics field for the high school, but it needs more money to fight the Oak Bluffs Planning Board’s appeal. Even if donations come in before the end of the year, the committee would still need to publicly accept the funds during a meeting in January. Read more here.
Coast Guard rescue
The Coast Guard from Nantucket got the spotlight recently. Crew members from Nantucket and Air Station Cape Cod conducted a joint rescue of a fishing boat and four people. They were stranded seven miles southeast of Martha’s Vineyard. That vessel made a stop in Vineyard Haven Harbor. Read more here.

Do-ray-MOO-fa
A quirky Island event is singing holiday carols to the cows at Grey Barn. Around 100 carolers gathered in Chilmark to make the season bright. Grey Barn co-founder Molly Glasgow led the all-ages crowd in holiday favorites like "Frosty the Snowman," "Jingle Bells," and "Joy to the World." Read that story here.
MEETINGS

No meetings for the holiday week.

Quote of the Day
"It’s not beneath me to ask for it."
— MVRHS school committee chair Kathryn Schertzer on the
committee seeking donations to fight the turf appeal

Hot Topic Comment
"Respectfully, ‘competitiveness’ is not the only argument, and is probably way down on the list. First, let’s not forget about just having a real track. Second, the reason the majority of high schools have synthetic turf is that it is cost effective."
— William MacArthur on the
MVRHS school committee and the turf lawsuit

Hot Topic Letter
"This is a note to the thieves who made off with our bird feeders. We have been feeding birds from that location for over 40 years. We will obviously miss the birds, but the birds will also miss the food. If you cannot afford to buy bird feeders, there is some question as to your ability to afford bird food. It would be to the benefit of all if you would return the feeders, much like you made off with them. (In the dark of the night.) We are crying fowl. A two-legged creature stole our bird feeders."
— From the MV Times archives, a note from Bob and Margie Aldrin in Tisbury from 2010. We wonder if they got their feeders back.

Today: I did not finish the afghan I was hoping to give to someone at the holidays. I say get your start now so it doesn’t happen to you next year. The West Tisbury library hosts a Knitting Group. Free. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Perhaps I can Meditate on my procrastination at Bodhi Path Buddhist Center. I can go in person or try it on Zoom. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The M.V. Ice Arena is open for Public Skating for all ages and abilities, if you like that sort of physical activity. It’s not quite New Year’s resolution time, so I’m holding off on fitness until that happens. 11:40 am. –C.B.

Visiting Vet
We’re surprised to learn that cats and dogs should not eat garlic or onions. That’s from our Visiting Vet columnist, Dr. Michelle Gerhard Jasny. She writes that these alliums can be tough on red blood cells and lead to anemia, a potentially fatal condition. Garlic or onion ingestion can also cause gastrointestinal signs that may appear right away. Read more here.
