Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is Pablo Picasso’s birthday. Can you imagine decorating a homemade card for him? It’s also Wednesday at MV Times Central, so by the time you read this, we’ll have wrapped up another edition of our favorite community newspaper. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Another month for SSA site
After facing delays and cost creep, the new SSA website and app look close to completion. The new site is expected to be released after Thanksgiving. The SSA hopes to acclimate folks to the website and be ready when summer reservations open in January. Get the details here.
Lease to Locals
Island housing advocates were given a presentation last week on a relatively new program geared toward housing people who reside in resort or seasonal communities. Lease to Locals works with local governments to provide incentives for property owners with underutilized housing units to rent to year-round residents. While the program is not yet on the Vineyard, it has been implemented on our sister Island of Nantucket. Here’s that story.

Barn raising for a cause
Island Autism’s new barn has been in the works this week. It’ll be part of the new Island Autism Center, which will provide space for day programming for Islanders with autism and other similar disorders, and eventually housing. The nonprofit is still in fundraising mode, and they are looking to hit a benchmark before beginning construction on the next phase of the project. Check out some photos from the barn raising here.
MEETINGS

The Oak Bluffs Planning Board meets at 5 pm on Thursday.  Here is the
agenda.

The MVTimes: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day
"While certainly more encouraging than a continued decline, the ‘flattening’ of the population estimate indicates that human activities are killing as many whales as are being born into the population, creating an untenable burden on the species."
— Heather Pettis, a research scientist with the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, on the
North Atlantic right whale population

Hot Topic Comment
"TTOR and the homeowners out there should cover the entire cost. The entire area isn’t really open to the public in any meaningful way so why should our tax dollars be spent on it?"
— R. Scott Patterson comments on Edgartown’s suggestion that The Trustees of Reservations ought to use revenue from OSV
sticker sales to help fund repairs to the Dyke Bridge

Hot Topic Letter
"All of the love and support meant so much to me through the years. I have also learned a lot in those years. I will miss all of you. Thank you, and I will continue to be involved in the senior center in the future."
Joyce Stiles-Tucker shares her gratitude for the town of Tisbury and its Council on Aging as she heads into retirement

Today: The Vineyard Cribbage Club meets on Wednesdays at the American Legion Hall in Edgartown. I’m not sure how to play, but I do know there’s food involved at these gatherings. Doors open at 5:30 and play starts at 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Quilting Circle sounds old-timey, doesn’t it? I love it. Join pals at the West Tisbury library for quilting time. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Grace Church hosts a Poetry Reading and Book Signing with Justen Ahren and his book of poetry "A Strange Catechism." It is a series of poems that tell a story (yes, I peeked online), and even for someone like me who doesn’t ordinarily get poetry, the words are powerful. 5 pm. –C.B.

Trains for Life’s Emergencies Sponsored

At Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, the Emergency Department team continues to upgrade their skills through professional training. Recently, educators from Boston Medical Center’s Community Outreach Mobile Education Training (COMET) provided training on pediatric emergencies. The team of doctors and nurses was put through four scenarios involving children. Each session ended with a debriefing on what went right, what could be improved upon, as well as some tips from observing emergency team members on what they might have attempted given the same scenarios. Learn more about the program here.

The sound of inspiration
Rebecca Laird’s high school and middle school strings students took a field trip recently to see (and hear) the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and were treated to the amazing sound of Yo-Yo Ma and his cello. For most of the students, it was their first time hearing a "real" orchestra, and it gave them inspiration to work even harder, helping them to better understand what can happen after a lot of diligent work. Read about the students here.
