School has a math problem The elephant in the room for the Tisbury School Committee is that the only option to house students if voters reject an additional $26 million is to house the students in rented modular classrooms that are currently in one of the school’s playgrounds. At a meeting on Tuesday, the school committee discussed the real possibility that taxpayers won’t support the additional funding. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the
details.
The ol’ switcheroo There were a couple of discussions about affordable housing at the Oak Bluffs select board meeting Tuesday. In one instance, the board was being asked to switch the property for planned veterans housing because of title issues on the approved lots. Meanwhile, town leaders seemed to forget their commitment to spend $750,000 on a project they approved at Southern Tier. Reporter Abigail Rosen has the details.
Financial aid Hospice & Palliative Care of Martha’s Vineyard held their Summer Soiree earlier this week, and the program’s pursuit was on the minds of those
in attendance for the fundraiser at Farm Neck. As we’ve reported previously, Hospice is looking to provide their care to Medicare patients on the Island. Monday’s event went a long way toward raising money for the program. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.

Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day "If we think about our planning horizons from 2050 to 2070 and forward, simple solutions along places like the waterfront commercial district in Tisbury will be exhausted. You won’t be able to just raise your building and raise the land, because the sea level rise would be to a point where those solutions aren’t really going to be successful. We’re going to have to think more strategically about how much [we] retreat, what sort of things can survive in those areas,
how much fill do we have to put in to keep things dry." –Ben Robinson of the MVC’s Climate Action Task Force on changes due to sea level rise
Hot Topic Comment Bruce Tucker commented on the fire that destroyed the Ocean View forcing the building to be demolished. "To the current owners: So damned sorry for your loss of business!!!!! And to the Jackson family — I’ve been thinking of you as well, I don’t even live on the Island, though I’ve been a visitor for many years — I got tons of memories of Ocean View, though they must be minute compared to yours."
Hot Topic Letter Margaret Harris wrote about the death of author and historian David McCullough. "What nice memories of a man who never forgot the Vineyard! I am so very glad that I knew both him and Rosalee. When Rosalee died, I couldn't imagine how David would ever live without her, and so he has now joined her. Best to
you, David, and thank you for never forgetting your neighbors!"

Staying in?
Who doesn’t love Ina Garten? The way she prepares for a dinner party, the way she and Jeffrey are so in love. Sigh. Connie Berry truly admires Garten’s recipe for Greek Panzanella, so much so that she
shared it with us this week.

‘The perfect time to tell this story’ As part of this year’s Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, a sneak peek of "A Jazzman’s Blues," a film written, produced, and directed by Tyler Perry, was shown to an excited audience of guests Saturday night at the Performing Arts Center. A few clips from the film were shown alongside questions and commentary from Perry himself. Reporter Lucas Thors has this story, which includes a one-on-one interview with Perry prior to the presentation.
