Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1789, the U.S. House of Representatives elected its first speaker, which has become one of the hardest jobs to keep on the political scene. Reminds us of the upcoming elections here on the Island. We’ve got a bunch coming. Do you know who is running? We’ll be bringing you updates in The Minute. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

No appeal for Nantucket
The short-term rental case impacting the Vineyard’s sister Island won’t be getting appealed in court. A land court ruling denied short-term rentals being used as a residential property’s primary use. The Nantucket select board deemed that the issue should go before voters in a town meeting. The case is ongoing and can have implications for Martha’s Vineyard. Read more here.

Schools' audit due in June
The school district's equity audit will finish by June, says Marge Harris, a former Vineyard educator involved in its implementation. Harris says that the superintendent and other district officials will receive the final audit report, and will then discuss releasing the findings publicly. Harris says that the audit is on schedule thus far. Read more here.

A decade on the board
Ewell Hopkins, a longtime member of the Oak Bluffs planning board, won’t be on the ballot this April during the town’s annual election. Hopkins says he isn’t seeking reelection. Instead, he wants to focus his efforts more on the environment. His vacancy comes as he and the planning board, on town meeting floor next week, push for zoning reform that he has long advocated for. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"There’s no one in our department that wants to see us move this way. We have volunteers that are really invested, through morality and professional development [...] But if no one can afford to live in Edgartown that can volunteer, we have to look at it differently."
— Edgartown Fire Chief Alexander Schaeffer on the decrease of volunteer firefighters on Island

Hot Topic Comment
"The housing bank bill is unnecessary. It will create unsustainable development and contribute to overpopulation. Just say 'no' to the housing bank bill. Keep Our Island Green"
— Dan Larkosh on the completion of IGI employee housing

Hot Topic Letter
"If you want your neighborhoods to remain familiar and comforting in spite of the many new and expanding businesses, there must be a distinction and protection between commercial and residential neighborhoods."

Friday's contest answer:
Randy Cook
The origins of ‘New Lane’
Cythia Riggs writes about the origins of West Tisbury’s New Lane. The road, she says, exists because of a clothesline. What started as a not-so-busy road to Tiah’s Cove started to gain some popularity because of a local eccentric, her chickens, their tombstones, and her poetry. You can read more about it here.
