Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Sea Serpent Day, so this sounds like a good time to highlight the Island’s famous sea serpent, Vanessa! Vanessa might be spotted at Farm Pond in Oak Bluffs during the summers and there’s even a book about Martha’s Vineyard’s favorite serpentine resident. Free charges?
The West Tisbury select board recently mulled over getting rid of the town’s free electric vehicle charging stations, after noticing that the majority of drivers benefitting from the free power are owners of highly expensive cars. A member of the town’s energy committee argued that those drivers likely don’t need to be provided with the subsidies, but some board members said they wouldn’t want to discourage future EV owners. Update empathy systems

Recently, he spoke with the Times on his experiences meeting people of various backgrounds and how America has more work to do on diversity. Read more here.
Astronaut inspiration
Several former and current astronauts were on the Island this weekend for an event inspiring the next generation to get involved in STEM education. The two-day event included NASA astronauts, representatives from Blue Origin, and an opportunity to tour a replica of the New Shepard spacecraft in Waban Park. Read our coverage here.

Quote of the Day
"This is the most productive time of the year for us. So it’s a nice event to just get people together, and also to bring the community closer to the fishermen."
— Deckhand Matteus Scheffer on the Fishermen’s Preservation Trust’s annual Meet the Fleet event

Hot Topic Comment
Don Keller comments on the SSA diverting ferries from Oak Bluffs: "What does this mean? ‘The SSA will be using the vehicle deck on the Island Home as we are able to.’ Does it not work? Why wouldn’t they be using that feature on every trip? It certainly cost a lot of money to design and install it. I have noticed that only one side occasionally has cars on it, despite the fact that it’s really hard to get reservations."

Hot Topic Letter
Ted Jochsberger writes to us about the West Tisbury select board’s recent inaction on a conflict of interest: "Any breach of ethics, such as not recusing oneself when a committee issue arises that involves an organization that the member belongs to or has an interest in, should be punished…Unfortunately this was not the case in a recent incident reported in this paper. The committee in question serves a very important function. It relies heavily on the confidence and good will of the people of the town. In my opinion the failure to mete out an adequate punishment in this instance is highly regrettable, and represents an unfortunate lack of judgment by those responsible."
Today: I’ve checked with my phone app and I think we’re in the clear for Musical Monday at Featherstone tonight. This is one event I’ve actually gone to. Mike Benjamin plays. Bring a beach chair or blanket. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

The Strand Theater hosts the 12th Annual M.V. Comedy Fest, and this is another event that seems to grow each year. The cozy venue seems like a really great place to check it out too. 8 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Some people are lucky enough to be artists and some are lucky enough to be poets. Fan Ogilvie is both. Her exhibit "Nos 1-6" is up at the Vineyard Haven library. Check it out from 10 am to 7 pm. –C.B.
