Pro-life request
West Tisbury received a request for a pro-life flag to be flown on a public flagpole. However, the select board decided to refer the request to town counsel for a legal opinion. Currently, the town does not have its own flag policy. Read more here.
Chilmark increases building permit fees
Chilmark has raised its fee rate for all new construction, to $6.50 per $1,000 of total building cost. Previously, all new construction permits cost $.75 per square foot. Demolition permit fees were also raised, to $500. Building inspector Adam Petkus explained the changes at a recent select board meeting. Petkus is also building inspector in Aquinnah, where building permit fees were recently raised per his recommendations. Read more here.
Welan attacked in Russian prison
Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine and brother of Island artist Elizabeth Whelan, who has been serving a 16-year-sentence at a Russian labor camp, has been attacked by another inmate, his family reports. Whelan was first arrested by Russian authorities back in 2018, and later convicted of espionage. U.S. officials maintain that he’s been wrongfully detained ever since. Here’s that story.

MEETINGS

Tisbury Select Board meets at 4 pm on Friday. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"I’ve seen the real estate market changing. We used to sell houses to people who actually wanted to be here, and be part of the community."
— West Tisbury short term rental committee member Karen Overtoom on a proposal to limit short-term rentals

Hot Topic Comment
"The goal is to make them legal while deterring investment rentals and to help homeowners and seasonal rental owners. We expect that the number of short term rentals will not significantly change, and we are hoping that the character of the community will be protected."
— Beatrice Phear comments on our story about possibly limiting short-term rentals

Hot Topic Letter
"Ever since I rode the Shining Sea Bikeway from Woods Hole to Falmouth a few years ago, I’ve wondered what it would take to get such markings on the miles and miles of pathway here on M.V. Not that a few five-gallon tubs of yellow paint will fix all that’s dangerously wrong with our local paths, but it’s a good place to start. Helmets off to O.B. for pointing the way."
— Tom Pallas writes to us praising some changes made in Oak Bluffs

Today: Some are calling it poignant and some are calling it a not-so-great depiction of true events. The only way to weigh in is to see "Killers of the Flower Moon." It’s Martin Scorsese’s film, so you know it brings big stars to the screen. M.V. Film Center. 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Overcomers Outreach is a faith-based recovery meeting open to adults who desire spiritual and emotional support while overcoming addictions, compulsive behaviors, or codependency. At the Red House. 7:15 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Vineyard Haven loves First Friday and this is the last of the year. It takes place at the M.V. Museum and brings all the usual "fun stuff" and also wreath-making and a DJ. Maybe I’ll take off work a little early to be the first in line at Goldies food truck. 4 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Ten years ago, the late Shirley Mayhew shared stories of big Christmas parties at her house, which she hosted for about 25 years, and she included her family's traditional holiday recipe for Oyster Stew. Try it yourself and see how it goes — perhaps it will become part of your own tradition.

Woodside Story
Writer Holly Nadler embarks on a new column for the community, where she’ll be checking in periodically from the "Elderly Front," as she calls it. She resides in Woodside Village, a senior housing complex in Oak Bluffs. Nadler writes that it’s not all bad getting old: "Recent studies have shown that elders among us have a certain calm attitude, almost as if, with everything else about us falling apart, we develop an unexpected mental health."
