A nitrogen mitigation program spearheaded by the county is underway, with two Island homeowners having already been awarded grants to help cover the cost of installing new septic systems. Attendees at the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center Sunday evening enjoyed like music and festive food during the "Hanukkah and All That Jazz" event. Menorahs were lit and many latkes were had. Here's that story. Across town, revelers and carolers gathered for Christmas in Edgartown. Read more here.

Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day “What an awesome experience for the kids, to get out on the Garden floor where the Celtics play.” — MVRHS Basketball coach Mike Joyce on the team playing at TD Garden in Boston
Hot Topic Comment “The town needs permanent office space with technology which enables town employees to conduct our business in an efficient manner or at least the ability to. And moving forward I believe it would be prudent to seriously discuss including the new police department offices into the design.” — Eric Poehler on Tisbury looking at building a new town
hall
Hot Topic Letter “Additional freight service from New Bedford would benefit Islanders. Vineyard Haven Terminal would be less busy if there were fewer SSA
freight boat trips there. How many freight vessel trips could be eliminated by one barge trip? How many fewer trucks crowding Vineyard Haven’s Five Corners?” — James D. Sullivan writes to us about a new freight service proposed for the Vineyard route
Today:Looking for something to do on Monday nights? The MVRHS Chess Club opens its doors and boards to all of us during Community Chess Nights. Folks at all skill levels are welcome. Free. Starts at 4:30 pm and runs until 6:30, so you’ve still got time. –Connie Berry
One of my favorites, “Miracle on 34th Street,” plays at the M.V. Playhouse’s Monday Night at the Movies. Given the choice, I’d still believe in Santa. $5 cash. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:St. Andrew’s in Edgartown hosts Choral Advent Evensong, a very nice tradition that happens, well, in the evening. It’s loosely based on canonical hours and hits sometime between vespers and compline. There’s today’s history lesson. 5:30 pm. –C.B.
