Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s National Read a Book Day. Can there be a better day to read a book than a rainy September day? Today is also primary day in Massachusetts. Polls are open until 8 pm tonight and The Times will have results as they become available. School also opened on the Vineyard

Primary decision It’s primary day in Massachusetts today. If voters want a say in who will be the next sheriff of Dukes County, they’ll have to pull a Democratic ballot. Incumbent Robert Ogden is facing a challenge from former Oak Bluffs Police Chief Erik Blake. There is no candidate on the Republican ballot. (Things are going smooth here while over on the mainland, Barnstable ballots were stuck in a safe.) Meanwhile, the other contested races with local implications are on the Republican side. Here’s a preview of today’s election and we’ll have results as they become available later tonight.
Seasonal flew It seems like just yesterday we were holding our breath waiting for a summer onslaught. Well, with Labor Day over we can all take a deep breath. We reached out to a number of Island businesses on Tuesday and the
reports were all similar — there was an uptick in business fueled by folks feeling a lot safer about travel and going out. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this update.
Back to school There was excitement in the air as students returned to classes at Oak Bluffs School on Tuesday. In fact, students all across the Island returned to school today. (Your Facebook feed must be filled with the smiling faces of students headed off in their best back-to-school outfits.) Reporter Eunki Seonwoo was up early and out at Oak Bluffs School to observe as they got things started. Here’s his story.

Hot Topic Comment Marie Laursen responded to the story about a letter issued by the parents of Henry Bowman Backer. "There are a number of parents here who have lost children, including me. Our
adult son Chris died of cancer several years ago. I will not forget Henry- or you, for you have already shown mercy towards those responsible, and generosity towards the public in terms of Red Cross training."
Hot Topic Letter The parents of Henry Bowman Backer wrote to bring attention to their son’s drowning death at the Edgartown Field Club and Boathouse. "This summer will end soon. Our
family’s grief in losing a beloved son, grandson, and big-brother will not. Allowing this tragedy to fade from your community’s memory does a grave dishonor to Henry. We ask that you have the heart to imagine yourself in our shoes."
