Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today was a significant day for celestial fans with a total eclipse of the sun. We won’t have another eclipse like this for another couple of decades. We hope you took the time to see it. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

With IHT's, help a year-round homeowner downsized and stayed on the island, and two Vineyard families purchased year-round affordable homes. Watch to see how we did it! You can help build more urgently needed affordable housing on Martha's Vineyard. Click here to donate now.
High-lights of the eclipse
Islanders gathered in various locations around the Island to take in the near-total eclipse on Monday, including the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Menemsha, and outside their homes and places of work. Oh, it was a struggle for some to find a pair of viewing glasses. We are writing up a story as the newsletter goes out, so check back in for more photos and stories. But here’s what we have for now.
In for a doozy?
Researchers at Colorado State University are predicting an extremely active hurricane season this year, perhaps one for the record books. The reasons are La Nina conditions and new highs in water temperature. Not only are more hurricanes expected, but they are more likely to make landfall. Whether we get one on the Vineyard remains to be seen. Read that here.

A heartwarming tournament
Fellow students of Waylon Sauer, a junior who died in a tragic accident last year, held a basketball tournament in his honor on Sunday. Hundreds showed up, and family and friends of Waylon say that they were overwhelmed with gratitude. We have photos and more about the event here.

Quote of the Day
"I was so sad to my core that he wasn’t here because he would’ve loved this event. His friends, community members, and coaches were participating — that would’ve meant the world to him."
— Wenonah Madison, mother of Waylon Sauer,
on a basketball tournament held Sunday in his honor

Hot Topic Comment
"Unfortunately, this statement of support leaves out mention that there is already proposed industrial development in a pristine residential area that is part of Area 1 of the proposed LIMOD. The residents who would be impacted are Tisbury residents who have no say. This letter of support lacks substance and erodes the credibility of this proposal."
— Nicholas De Rose on proposed changes at
Oak Bluffs town meeting tomorrow

Hot Topic Letter
"If you share my values and concerns, or if you don’t, let your voice be heard. We are at a tipping point on Martha’s Vineyard. I pray we have not run past it."
— Kriner Cash writes to us about attending
town meeting in Oak Bluffs

Today: Who knew Monday nights could be so great? One of my favorite things is happening: Bingo at the American Legion Hall in Vineyard Haven. 6:30 pm. (Get there early because you’ve got to get those cards lined up.) –Connie Berry

If you’d rather do a little boot scootin’, try the P.A. Club with Blue Yonder playing the tunes tonight. I’m so glad I finally got to use "boot scootin’" in a sentence. That's been a goal for a while now. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The Chilmark library hosts World Cultures Class for Kids. Here’s what they say: "explore the geography, music, food, celebrations, dances, and folklore of Brazil, while learning basic Portuguese vocabulary throughout each class." For ages 4 to 7. 3 pm. –C.B.

A voyage to the pond
On My Way columnist Jonathan Burke writes about a voyage on Tisbury Great Pond on a beautiful but chilly day. It isn’t quite spring, as Burke notes, but some color was sneaking through. As he writes, there’s a lot to the Great Pond, including coves. Check out his report here.
