Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Don’t look now, but the forecast for Saturday is sunshine — not even clouds — and nearly 70 degrees. It seems like a decade since we’ve had a Saturday without rain. We won’t hold our breath, but it could be a good day for the Island Cup.. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
The organizers behind an effort to create a winter homeless shelter in Oak Bluffs announced that they are withdrawing their application. This came just days after a hearing before the Oak Bluffs zoning board, where residents living nearby the proposed location raised objections. Harbor Homes also suggested that additional permitting would be problematic. Read our coverage here.
Right whale population trends
While North Atlantic right whale populations are not declining as fast as before, their small numbers are a risk to survival. Particularly, there are human-caused dangers. Read more here.

Planners working to form Tisbury's master plan illustrated concepts and priorities for the downtown, which were shown during an event last week. The main goal is preparing for sea level rise and larger and stronger storms. Topics included the possibility of a storm causing 10 feet of flooding at the waterfront in 2030, and plans to add parking underneath Stop & Shop and around the post office. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Given the outspoken opposition from neighbors on Hudson Ave., Harbor Homes staff realized it would not make sense to place at-risk individuals in a location where they are not welcomed into the neighborhood to build trusting relationships."
— Officials with Harbor Homes on their decision to withdraw a winter shelter proposed for Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Comment
"Well deserved! Enjoy your retirement, Joyce! Thank you for your many years of service in the community."
— Greyson Bowker on the retirement of the director of the Tisbury council on aging, who has been with the senior center for over four decades

Hot Topic Letter
"While more housing is needed on the Vineyard, this is not the housing we need or in the location it is needed. What the Island needs is affordable housing, including low-cost apartments for seasonal workers… Let’s be clear, this complex does not address the real needs of the Island. It is just more congestion in the already congested heart of Edgartown."
— Dave Manly of the Dark Woods Homeowners Association writes to us about the more than 60 units proposed in Edgartown

Today: Looking for a basic drawing class? Try the West Tisbury library’s Drawing Group. It meets on Mondays, and prompts, tips, tricks, and guidance will be shared. No signup required. 5:30 pm.

Philip Weinstein, the Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor of English Emeritus at Swarthmore College, presents a six-part seminar on Tolstoy’s "War & Peace," hosted via Zoom by Lifelong Learning Swarthmore. Follow the Vineyard Haven library’s directions for access. 7:30 pm.–C.B.
Tomorrow: All my favorite things rolled into one: Friends of Family Planning’s Annual Pig Roast at the P.A. Club. Mo’s takes care of the pig, you pay $30 for a plate of deliciousness. And the Jaywalkers (two very good musicians I just heard Saturday, Barbara Puciul and Jessie Leaman) play from 7 to 10 pm, but the eats start at 4 pm. –C.B.
