Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Some scares from earlier today are all settled now — one a widespread power outage and one a false active shooter call. In longer-lasting news, Chromebooks are in at MVRHS and everything else out, and Menemsha may gain a general store. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: MV Film Society

At home you are surrounded by life’s distractions, inclined to pick up the phone or do the dishes. Escape reality for a few hours with a screening at The Film Center.
Enjoy cinema snacks and relax in one of our reclining chairs in front of the big screen.
Simply sit and immerse yourself. You’ve earned it.

To go along with a Chromebook for every student, the high school committee passed a ban on using personal devices during school hours. A third violation may get your student an in-school suspension. Principal Dingledy looks forward to a less distracted student body, but anticipates some frustrated students. Read more here.

A general store for Menemsha
Although plans are temporarily on hold, the vacant space which used to house Menemsha Deli is set to be transformed into a general store, hopefully for next year.

False alarm
Tisbury Police responded to a call that a man had shot his father and had his mother at gunpoint at Beach Street, but it turned out to have been a hoax. Officers came to the area with rifles and determined there was no threat. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"My heart is always filled to the brim after the fair knowing how hard everyone works to make it happen."
—Lauren Lynch, fair manager and Ag Society president, on the Ag Fair

Hot Topic Comment
"It is a growing discussion. The bike paths were not built to have motorized vehicles. We now have electric vehicles going 15 -35mph. Sometimes weighing up to 70 lbs. it is a dereliction of duty not to take these of the paths. Or at the very least and abdication of responsibility of elected officials. Walkers cannot react from in front or behind!"
—Kevin McDermott on moped rental ban failing to get traction

Hot Topic Letter
"Mr. and Mrs. Cormie’s lonely battle to enforce Tisbury’s zoning ordinance at 97 Spring St. against Vineyard Wind’s improper attempt to inject workforce housing into a single-family residential zone is heading to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for a hearing on Sept. 9."
—Kenneth Wainwright on the risk of Spring Street workforce housing development
Today: Laughter is essential to everyday life and so an extra dose at Bite Me Standup Comedy sounds like a great idea. So do potstickers, bang bang cauliflower, and maybe a beverage. Barn Bowl & Bistro. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

There’s a Community Sing at the Tabernacle. Believe me, if I go you’ll laugh even harder than at Bite Me. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: When I first moved here a dozen years ago, I went to one of Marsha Winsryg’s African Crafts Summer Porch Sales and absolutely loved it. There were tons of things to choose from, all handmade. Follow the directions. 10 am to 2 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
It was love at first bite when Connie Berry took a creative Mediterranean spin in her test kitchen and tossed together a Lentil Salad with Dressing. This one-dish wonder is layered with harmonizing flavors from fresh herbs and vegetables, Italian seasoning, crumbled feta, and green olives. Add a dash of Island time and you'll wonder where the French legumes have been all your life.

All Island beekeepers and anyone who is curious are welcome to attend the next monthly meeting of the M.V. Beekeeping Club at the Agricultural Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 5 pm. There is also a Winter Hive Management talk by a Massachusetts apiary inspector and his team on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 pm. Both are free with no sign-up, so just buzz on over.

'How We Coped'
Kathy Ham just released her book, "How We Coped." In it, Ham uses cartoons to express a number of challenges — some humorous — Islanders experienced during the pandemic. Relive them (funny, we promise) here.
