Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Perhaps one of the best moments in radio history took place on this day some 80 years ago. Orsen Welles’ "War of The Worlds" was a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth. Welles didn’t plan it as a hoax, but it had a profound effect on its millions of listeners. If you haven't heard it before, check it out. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
Our intrepid reporter Eunki Seonwoo was on Nantucket this weekend taking in the sights and sounds during the Battle in the Atlantic, the new Golden Anchors, and the Island Cup. Spoiler: The Vineyard did quite well, taking three of four trophies home on Saturday. It all came down to the final seconds of the last game of the day. Get a look at our photos and more details here.
Tisbury's consolidated town hall task group recommended a town-owned property at 55 West William Street for the eventual placement of a new consolidated town hall. This is instead of the former EduComp building that had been eyed as a possible location. The reordering of site priorities comes from space constraints and high costs with EduComp, while the 55 West William site already has water and power access and is also centrally located. Robert S. Brustein Dies
The pioneer of nonprofit theater died at his home in Cambridge yesterday at the age of 96. Brustein was a seasonal resident of Lambert’s Cove, and he brought several of his plays to the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, including "Spring Forward, Fall Back" and "The English Channel." He spoke often at the Hebrew Center, where they held a 90th birthday party for him. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Twenty years from now, thirty years from now, they can say they were the first ones to win it and it’s going to say 2023 Martha’s Vineyard girls soccer on that trophy."
— MVRHS girls soccer coach Matthew Malowski on
the big win over the weekend

Hot Topic Comment
"This was the best Vineyard football game I have ever watched. The guys fought back to win."
— Terry Donahue comments on our coverage of the Battle in the Atlantic and the Island Cup

Hot Topic Letter
"We need to recognize fellow Islanders who, oftentimes, serve us in a myriad of ways, so quietly and kindly. As a history teacher at MVRHS, I, along with fellow teacher, Q.B., were lucky enough to have some of these men come into our classrooms each year as we were teaching the Vietnam War."
Marge Harris thanks us for the Voices of Veterans special section published last week

Today: Before we get into all the fun Halloween "stuff" for the younger crowd, let’s take some time for ourselves at the American Legion Hall in Vineyard Haven and play a little Bingo. Doors open at 6 and play starts at 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

M.V. Screenprinting Co. brings us a Haunted House. And what’s great about it is that from 4 to 6 pm it’s kid-friendly, and then from 7 to 10 pm it turns into a lights-out horror show. I’m not going to lie, I'm too scared to go. $5 admission benefits the Tisbury Fire Department. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Bring the little ones to the children’s room at the Edgartown library in their Halloween costume and pick up a treat bag filled with goodies. It’s a safe bet that treats will be flowing practically everywhere tomorrow. 10 am to 5 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Here's a seasonal dish that doesn't include sugar, but Island Grown Initiative found that children at a local school liked it anyway: Stewed Pumpkin, a traditional recipe from Plimoth Plantation.

If you'd like to share a recipe with the community, send it to us at recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a photo of the final creation and a brief backstory if you have one.

Friday's contest answer:

The Martha’s Vineyard Charter School has been collaborating with the African American Heritage Trail on research projects since 2020. Then a history class worked with the trail to clean and restore the Old Marine Cemetery in Oak Bluffs. More recently, students learned about the Vineyard five: residents who helped to register voters in the South during the Civil Rights period, and who were among the founders of the Vineyard chapter of the NAACP.
