Battling beetles and fighting firesVineyard
officials and conservationists heard expert opinions on Friday on how to combat the southern pine beetle, beech leaf disease, and the risk of wildfires. Experts said that the pests pose significant risks to pitch pines and beech trees, and recommended thinning pines in affected areas as well as considering prescribed fires. Read more about it here.

Finding a county treasurer Dukes County is getting a new treasurer. Juliet Mulinare has a background in management. She takes over for the outgoing treasurer that served a little more than a year. Meantime, the county is looking to make the position appointed rather than elected, having had difficulty finding someone for the job in the past. Read that story here.

Woods Hole construction enters next phaseThe Steamship Authority has entered into a $32 million contract to advance construction of buildings at
the Woods Hole terminal. The construction is underway in subphases to continue SSA operations. However, not everyone was on board for the design. Read more here.
